If it was due to a delay on their part of one of their codeshare partners then this to be expected but if it's a totally separate flight on a budget carrier then it really isn't their problem. I missed a Iberia to BA connection in Madrid recently but it was no problem, just a new boarding card issued and I had a couple of hours extra in their business lounge.

You also need to factor in the frequency of services. On a route such as London-New York their will be a service on the airline (or a partner) every couple of hours. From Bangkok many airlines only fly once a day so missing a flight can mean a 24 hour wait.

It's really not worth the risk just for a few extra hours in CM. You'd have to get the first flight out to make the connection which would put a dampener on your final night out there knowing that you would have to get up at the crack of dawn.

In these cases it was due to my arriving late at the airport because of train and coach problems. Hence why I regard myself as having been very fortunate.

We are going to Thailand in November, and flying back from BKK at 13:05 on a Saturday. Our last week will be spent in Chang Mai, 1 hours flight away. Ideally we want to fly back from Chang Mai that morning early, into BKK main airport (Suvarnabhumi), and hang around for 4 hours or so for our flight home to Heathrow. But, if theres a delay or any issues leaving Chang Mai and we misss the flight home to England, what happens about getting home please?

I know we could fly down to BKK the day before, but realyl want as long as possible in Chang Mai, and dont like BKK as a city anyway

Would insurance cover this kind of delay, missed flight?

Three to four hours is fine. But make sure that you are checked in online for all of your flights.
On any weekday you will have the choice of up to five early morning flights to BKK. Of course you don't want to make the mistake of selecting DMK.

You can also check the on-time performance of the available flights to help you in deciding which to select.

Also worth checking which airlines will interline baggage on separate bookings to your international connection. If they don't then you will have to collect your luggage and check in again at BKK which adds time.

These are the interline agreements for Bangkok Airways (one of my favourite airlines in the world)
