what if we miss a flight home

We are going to Thailand in November, and flying back from BKK at 13:05 on a Saturday. Our last week will be spent in Chang Mai, 1 hours flight away. Ideally we want to fly back from Chang Mai that morning early, into BKK main airport (Suvarnabhumi), and hang around for 4 hours or so for our flight home to Heathrow. But, if theres a delay or any issues leaving Chang Mai and we misss the flight home to England, what happens about getting home please?

I know we could fly down to BKK the day before, but realyl want as long as possible in Chang Mai, and dont like BKK as a city anyway

Would insurance cover this kind of delay, missed flight?

No, I certainly wouldnt risk it, I'd make sure I was in Bangkok the night before.

In SE Asia I would never rely on an internal flight to connect to long haul. Much safer and less stressful to fly down from CM the previous evening. There are loads of cheap hotels near the airport so you don't have to get into the city and out again.

If you miss your flight then it becomes your problem, it generally means buying a full price one way ticket to get home then spend several months arguing with an insurance company whether you are entitled to anything back.

    Either

    1) Book flights from Chang Mai to UK in the first place
    2) Travel the previous day to BKK

Night before, anything else is too risky.

  • I'm taking a similar risk coming back from the USA. A short Dublin stop before hopping on a Ryanair flight to Manchester.

I'm comfortable that I can afford to pay for alternative flights, utilise Avios or catch a ferry if something goes wrong.

    Are you?

Are you mad or what? Why would you risk it for another few hours in CM?

It just does not make sense to me. Surely you would be on edge regarding delayed flights from CM to BKK, you have said so already.

Don't be silly, just do as others have said, leave CM as late as possible day before, and go to an hotel near the airport in BKK for the night before. You will probably need to be at BKK airport around 10 am anyway.

Hope you have a great trip, but sometimes it pays to be sensible....

No you will not be covered on your insurance. You are CHOOSING to leave it that tight, miss the flight, tough luck.

No one has suggested having your flights on a single PNR/ itinerary. If all flights are on a single ticket it's the airlines responsibility to get you home if you misconnect due to flight delays.

May be too late for you now, but helpful for others.
