WOW Air

Hi All - asking for opinions here on cancelled flight and getting cost of rebooked flight back.
Scenario - on long haul flight with WOW Air from Miami - Reykjavik and then a connecting flight with same airline to Gatwick.
At Miami arrived at checkin to find it closed whilst they confirm technical state of plane - after about 1hr they cancel the flight leaving about 300+ disgruntled travellers.
Options that WOW air made - (a) refund of flight (b) hotel and food vouchers with a view to rebooking on next available WOW air flight which according to them over a week later (they don't run many !)
So left with either being stuck in Miami for a week or so (couldn't really do that despite it's attractiveness), sought out alternative flights with another airline (WOW Air didn't offer to try and do that - their customer service is in India and fair to say not very easy to get thru or understand them fully in such a complex scenario).
So at extra expense managed to get rebooked via different airline and route to land back in UK at Heathrow and only about a few hours later.
So I'll get back a refund from WOW which doesn't cover the full expense of the rebooked tickets. Does anyone know or advise on the following please.
a) My Travel Insurance with Barclays doesn't seem to want to know about claiming against it as the scenario not explicitly covered in Terms of policy.
b) I just ideally want to cover the difference between original flight and rebooked flight cost - not overly bothered in compensation unless of course its the only way to make up the shortfall.
Anyone any thoughts or am I stuffed and should have perhaps taken a delay in Miami to fall under the Delay compensation guidelines.???
Thanks

You are owed €600 in compensation, plus the cost of the new flight you arranged (minus the cost of the original flight you paid for - since Wow should have rerouted you, and it's not reasonable to expect to wait for a week for a flight back to the UK). You might need to take them to court though.0
