I see assessors points when they are suspicious of people with non-NHS aids as they can be used by conmen to support their case. However it is unfair on ladies who want a pretty sparkly or floral stick and people who want crutches that don't clank and click every time they are tapped on a floor.
I think there's a line between buying your own off your own back and buying your own because your prescription ones aren't suitable for whatever reason.
I have a few wheelchairs now, the nhs one is somewhere in my mums garage. I got mine as an emergency order so couldn't get anything custom. The one I'm currently preferring is ultra light weight with power wheels and it's "emoji yellow" coloured.
If anyone were to say "that's not a prescription chair" I can say "no my prescription one is at home, this is one I bought myself because they don't supply the power wheels on nhs chairs, I was recommended this set up by a private OT, here's the notes". Same as a lady with a sparkly crutch could say "no, these were bought privately to be customised because you're not allowed to customise the hospital ones. My hospital crutches are kept at home as a back up, here's the letter from the consultant telling my GP that he's referring me to be assessed for crutches and here's my report from the assessment".0
