USB on TV Query

My TV has a USB port. I have downloaded a video clip from my computer onto a USB stick but when I put the USB stick in my TV nothing happens. By that I mean the video does not play. Any idea why not ??

I've used http://www.freemake.com/ to convert video format

Our Sony TV will only play MP4's whereas the newer Samsung seems to play most types.
