Approaching roadworks last night I was overtaken by an Addison Lee people carrier travelling in a closed off lane. 30 seconds later he had tried to push in on the blind side of the MegaBus in front of me and got squashed.
Why can't that happen to everybody that holds other people up by using closed lanes?

You obviously don't mean the open bit of lane before the lane actually closes, because that would be silly.
I do wish people would learn to merge sensibly, it would cut congestion considerably.0 -

This! One lane queing and moving slowly for miles before a lane is closed off makes no sense.
Use both lanes in full and zip in people.
If only idiots would let this happen!0 -
You do realise what a red x means on the overhead gantry above a lane don't you?0

Funnily enough I meant what I said, a closed lane. For the hard of thinking that is the one with the red X above it on the gantry.0 -

If it's on the motorway, lane closures are marked by Gantry signs usually way before the lane actually physically ends.
It's an offense to go through them when the lane is closed though and carries points.
Not sure if this is the type of lane closure the OP is meaning, or the "merge in turn" style ones.
Edit: Just posted this at same time as OP.All your base are belong to us.0 -
Folk just don't know what "merge in turn" means.0

In this case it is irrelevant ... the vehicle in the closed lane had no right to be there - in fact the driver had committed an offence.0 -

For the really hard of thinking (i.e. me) you have failed to be specific enough.
For complete avoidance of doubt - has the vehicle cutting in already passed a gantry with a red X, or are they about to?0 -
Yes some drivers do this all the time. There is one part of the A38 between Huthwaite and Sutton-in-Ashfield, which is on a slight downhill gradient. Approaching the end of a Dual carriageway and a closing lane into two lanes, clearly signed for about ½ a mile, drivers race to overtake at over the 70 limit, in order to get there first. It is really, really dumb: I never let them in, just close right up. Seeing the rage on their faces is pathetically amusing. Once I even had a huge truck trying it on - it was a local haulage firm and the driver must have known about it. I didn't let him in, neither did anyone else. He was till there in my rear mirrors when I passed around the bend.I think this job really needs
a much bigger hammer.

Did you specify in your OP that it was a red X? No.
It could easily have been an advisory on lane closed ahead. Passing a yellow arrow pointing to the left is also not an offence.
Your post was as clear as mud.
If you're going to rant, at least be clear what you're ranting about0
