Am I entitled to a refund?

Hi,

I recently arrived at a spa hotel with my husband to celebrate our ten year wedding anniversary, after checking in, 4 hours later we received an urgent call asking us to return home as my 2 year old son required hospital treatment. We immediately checked out, not using any facilities but I had already paid in full. The hotel offered me £25 compensation as I complained that they also asked me to pay for parking after knowing our urgency. I had already paid £298 for the hotel that wasn't used.

Please can you advise, my travel insurance won't pay for trips less than 3 days.

No. You can only have goodwill. It was not their fault you went home.
  • Are you entitled to a refund? Short answer is no, long answer is the same no. You have checked in.

Why did you have/take travel insurance that didn't cover you?

In fairness , whilst I always take out travel insurance for holidays, it would never occur for me to take out insurance for an overnight stay.

The OP, I agree, isn't entitled to a refund though

If you hadn't checked in you might have been eligible for a refund for the 2nd night ... it all depends on the T&Cs of your booking.

As it was not the fault of the venue that your child was ill, then all you can hope for is a good will gesture, as they would not have been able to re-sell your room at such short notice.

Your only option was to find someone else at short notice to take your place, but obviously with a child requiring medical attention, this was not an option.

It wasn't your child's fault they got ill, nor was it the hotel's fault, and as you haven't got any insurance that will cover this, then it is just one of those unfortunate things...

Or take it out of your 2 year olds savings for inconveniencing you??? (obviously I am joking...)

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)
  • Hi thanks for your responses, not sure the sarcastic replies are warranted when I'm only asking for advice!

The hotel did manage to re-sell my room for both nights so they weren't out of pocket.

My travel insurance is included within my bank account so it wasn't taken out solely for this trip.

Considering taking it out if my child's savings as advised lol 😂

Do you have this in writing?

As the room was no longer available to you, then I think they ought to be refunding less an admin fee or any meals that were paid for.

It is rather cheeky to rebook the room and not refund. If they are not forthcoming with a partial refund, I think I would be posting on their social media pages with details of what happened and thei lack of empathy given they resold the room...

  • No they haven't refunded me. The receptionist confirmed the room had been re-sold over the phone when I called to politely ask for a refund. All the hotel gave me was £25 compensation because I made a complaint.
