When to cancel O2 contract?

My O2 contract is nearly up. The website says I have nothing left to pay off and will finish paying it off through monthly payments, on 3 October 2017. The 3rd is when they bill me.

I'll want to get a PAC code and keep my number to switch to a cheap SIM only deal elsewhere. When is the best time to cancel? Will I get billed for a whole month or just part of it on the final bill? I'm assuming I should get the PAC code and use it around 3rd October to minimise costs.

Thanks

Request the PAC around 3rd September and exercies it to the other provider a few days before 3rd Ocrober. DO NOT give notice to cancel IF you intend asking for the PAC; it's either the PAC or the notice - the contract won't end unless you do one or the other. The PAC expires after 30 days and the contract would continue, since any notice to cancel is cleared once you request the PAC.
  • Sounds about right to me, be aware that you still need to give 30 days notice (otherwise you get billed for a further 30 days), so phone and ask ASAP about when best to request your PAC, etc. Using your PAC terminates the contract.

Don't rush to cancel your direct debit.

Thanks, that's what I thought but wanted to get it right this time. And it always seems such a pain calling phone providers and getting through to the retention team. I flipping hate those conversations when I already know I want to cancel!

Has above Don't rush to cancel your direct debit let it run because as soon as you get the Pac code and use it your contract is automatically cancelled.

If for some reason they do take some extra money out you can always get it back but if you cancel the DD and they try to take money out and its not there they will default your credit record which stays on you Credit Record for about 7yrs and will make it harder to get anything on credit if you need it to be honest i never cancelled mine in all the years i have had contracts.
