log into the router's GUI (often 192.168.1.1 and the username/pw are normally provided), then look for the broadband status and line stats - these will tell you how fast your router is connected to the isp, noise margins, line attenuation, etc.

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple :D

Thanks GunJack, I did log in whilst I was there on Tuesday (it's actually 192.168.1.254 but no matter) but I was only looking to show daughter how to find and change the Wi-Fi channel, didn't think/know to look at stats. I will ask her to have a look (I am at home now and as it's 90 miles away, it's not a quick pop round the corner) and see what she can find.

if you both install Teamviewer on your machines, you can see what she's doing/remote control her pc and do it yourself.

Good idea, although she is savvy enough to be able to carry out my instructions sent by e-mail earlier today. However the problem is solved as her B/B dropped out completely and she has managed (after 1 hour on the phone to BT) to arrange an engineer to call next week and investigate the fault that they now agree exists!!
