I had a direct debit monthly agreement with Southern Water who without authorisation or any communication claimed an extra significant amount. As I wanted to get it sorted quickly, and had little confidence in that happening with SW, to avoid getting into overdraft territory I reported to my bank (Nationwide) and the money was refunded within a couple of days.
I wondered whether the bank had previous history with SW DDs to act so quickly but I have always thought that the bank would give the customer the benefit of the doubt when it comes to DDs.

Having been in Southern Water's area, they did the same to me and my bank refunded me under the reason "no notice of payment". As there had been none.

The Direct Debit indemnity scheme doesn't however extend to contractual disputes, which is why there is no error as far as the bank is concerned. The DDI scheme is limited to several circumstances and the OP's case doesn't fit into any of them. It's not a "benefit of doubt" thing, it's a "this isn't the actual point of the indemnity scheme" thing.

One does have to point out however that the OP's husband has made a prize b*llend of himself. Bank employees are indeed customers just like anyone else, and entitled to complain as much as anyone else, but it is not usually a good idea to run screaming to the CEO about any complaint unless you're abundantly sure of its correctness.

All I could read is blah blah blah EE is to blame blah blah blah. This repeating itself thousand times. No need to add details unless they are relevant, in this case not.

When there is an actual complaint that you can blame Santander for then you can start writing (short version please). This comes from a person who switched from Barclays as they screwed up a few times (and they were to blame) to Santander who I have not had any problems with.

Yes, I noticed that too. :D
Retired at age 56 after having "light bulb moment" due to reading MSE and its forums. Have been converted to the "budget to zero" concept and use YNAB for all monthly budgeting and long term goals.

Wouldn't hold out much hope of exec complaints helping. Girl I just spoke to was rude, didn't acknowledge half of my email and when I quizzed her she terminated the call.

Personally I'd avoid them like the plague

As it seems very likely that the error the OP posted about is not the bank's (based on the info the OP provided - and the comments provded since reviewing that info) I wouldn't hold out much hope of anything at all from the bank, as it is probably not their error and the OP is probably wasting the Exec's time.

In which case, if that's correct, this whole thread is based on a falsehood.

Your complaint (whatever that is) to Santander is another matter entirely.

I have no problem with Santander. Most of my transactions are handled online but on my occasional visits to my local branch I have found them to be friendly and efficient.

Teacher: What did you do in your school holidays, Trevor?

Trevor: I fooled a bunch of MSE users by pretending I was a woman who wrote to the Santander CEO.
