The cheapest way to get EE internet for 3 weeks is to buy the rolling contract at £17 plus the mobile hub for £10, then cancel as soon as you get home. (Total £27)

The PAYG option would instead cost £50.

Now, exactly how sure are you that your sales person didn't explain this to your husband and your husband didn't take the (significantly) cheaper rolling contract option? I mean, I would have...

I suggest digging out your Curry's receipt. This should make it clear - and should have paperwork with it to support the tariff that you were on.

Flipside, I do agree with you - Santander should have immediately refunded you the money and then taken it back off you again when they investigated and found for it to be taken legitimately.

And for full disclosure - I also "hate" Santander (I probably don't put enough energy into it to call it hate, but I'm not a fan). I had an additional cardholder on my credit card - they were sending his card to a different address because when I had updated my address, it had not updated his. He was not otherwise a customer and T&Cs say additional cardholders must live at the same address as the main cardholder. They would not change the address on my advice, and didn't understand my (somewhat irrational, but I still believe well founded) frustration that even though it was my card and I was liable for it, the additional cardholder had the power to issue cards to whatever address he saw fit without my knowledge. I have an additional cardholder on every credit card I have, and in all other circumstances I am the sole customer, they do not consider the additional cardholder a customer - because they're not.

But I just cancelled the card and don't use them any more.

I also imagine you're not stuck with them because your husband works there. He may have to be paid into a Santander account, but there's nothing stopping you transferring his entire wage out on payday to another account and running that as your main current account.

Last month I noticed a payment to AA breakdown, which was the wrong time of year for ours, which is AA but through Saga; there also being a similar payment in two previous years, the first one being a week after my husband paid a friend's AA insurance by card (She was unwell and paid him in cash ).

How did the AA have your husbands account number and sort-code just from a card payment? It sounds like what you had was a CPA and not a direct debit.

A direct debit is the bank's problem - the Direct Debit Guarantee makes it so.

I had a direct debit monthly agreement with Southern Water who without authorisation or any communication claimed an extra significant amount. As I wanted to get it sorted quickly, and had little confidence in that happening with SW, to avoid getting into overdraft territory I reported to my bank (Nationwide) and the money was refunded within a couple of days.
I wondered whether the bank had previous history with SW DDs to act so quickly but I have always thought that the bank would give the customer the benefit of the doubt when it comes to DDs.

Santander are fine, till something goes wrong.
Then it's a horrible mess of incompetence and lies. Even branch managers didn't seem to have a clue what they were doing.

Still haven't got round to moving, but will do shortly.

This is the most likely explanation for the ongoing direct debit. I used a similar dodge from HotUKDeals to get a MiFi device very cheaply. I cancelled the agreement with the mobile company, and cancelled the direct debit with my bank. It appears the the OP's hubby has failed to do these cancellations.
