Is it best to buy the approved market products only? They are very costly
Will read the link thanks
I wouldn't risk anything but the proper stuff myself. It's not worth it even if it's a few quid wasted IMHO.0 -
Ok i have seen glass bead on ebay see below
http://m.ebay.co.uk/itm/GLASS-BEAD-25KG-ALUMINIUM-OXIDE-BLAST-GRIT-SHOT-BLASTING-SAND-BEST-QUALITY-/302209554877?epid=913708005&hash=item465d17d9bd%3Ag%3AM0QAAOSwL7VWslM7&_trkparms=pageci%253A7115431f-8cfe-11e7-93d6-74dbd180f746%257Cparentrq%253A2fd4851f15e0a990f380347affff3b3e%257Ciid%253A2

If so maybe it isn't best to do it in garden as I have kids walking aroubd and playing

I use medium grit Glass beads for blasting my Motorcycle parts, Calipers, engine casings etc, removes paint corrosion quickly
If you need to remove Rust from Cast iron, steel parts soaking in Alloy Wheel cleaner works well
I buy mine from TPS (Trade parts specialists ) about £6 for 5 ltrs plus VAT0 -
stranger12 wrote: »What paint stripper would you use that is strong?
As I said above, I have heard good things about the Starchem product.stranger12 wrote: »By active ingrediant what do you mean?
The bit in paint stripper that actually does the stripping. From what I read, it has a very low (or maybe high?) flash point, which means that if you just get that chemical neat and paint it on your caliper, it will evaporate long before it has chance to do any work. So it's mixed with other stuff to help to stop it from doing that.stranger12 wrote: »I am thinking of using brake fluid
No, no, no. Given that you're stripping a brake caliper, don't you think that the paint on it might be impervious to damage by brake fluid? In any case, once you have brake fluid, you then need another stage to clean that off properly otherwise the new paint will bubble.0 -

Ordinary citric acid works well for rust removal too, particularly if you have a lot to do.
A few years ago I made myself a blast cabinet and use glass beads for light alloy components and carbide grit for ferrous parts. The carbide grit quickly wears out the blast gun nozzles though, even the ceramic type.
I wouldn't use sand as blast media. Even basic research in pre-internet days revealed the potential health hazards.0 -
So glass bead and a cabinet?
I am looking to buy machine mart cabinets around £130
https://www.machinemart.co.uk/p/heavy-duty-blast-cabinet/?da=1&TC=GS-051710061&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI6YO69bX_1QIVjZztCh2Y4ANKEAQYAyABEgKXJPD_BwE
If i understand correctly the cabinet lid will be closed so all blasting done using the glove box and nozzle there
This would mean all the mess stays there rather than all over the place
Am i correct?
Re glass bead, was i correct saying it is glass particles?0 -
Here is my compressor. It is rated at 14.5 cfm.
how do i know what that 14.5 cfm is rated at what pressure?
Can it be the maximum 8 bar it has on the rating so 14.5 at 8 bar?
https://www.machinemart.co.uk/p/clarke-tiger-161010-3hp-100-litre-air-compres/
this is the manual

I use one of these, about half the price of the Machine Mart one.......http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Sandblaster-Sand-Blaster-Blasting-Blast-SandBlasting-Bead-Cabinet-90L-WITH-LED-/261331219412?epid=1058780702&hash=item3cd88df3d4:g:nlUAAOxywFhTck~b0

Yes if you use a cabinet it keeps the mess inside, yes glass beads media is crushed recycled glass0

There could be a few reasons why the OPs little blaster is not working very efficiently
1 (which we already know) wrong media
2 Low air pressure
3 Low air volume
I bought a 20 kg tub of the same grit he linked to well over a year ago and still have half of it left. That's after numerous sets of calipers and carriers, umpteen engine mounts and various other rusty bits from various Land Rovers and cars.
Mind you I wouldn't use a total loss blaster on anything that is small enough to fit in a blasting cabinet.0
