we do not want an intergrated washer and there is already a socket/pipework there ready and waiting.

Are there any pipes running across the wall where you are wanting to locate the dishwasher ?

If so, you may struggle to find a free standing model that will sit all the way under the countertop. http://www.beko.co.uk/support/faqs/dishwashers/are-all-standard-size-dishwashers-the-same-size

In my experience, an integrated dishwasher (did you say you didn't want one of those? ;)) will fit where a 600 base unit came from, BUT a free standing one needs maybe 610mm, which you can't really just 'magic' from an already fitted kitchen!
