so as i have a brand new house with lovely new carpets in i am after some tried and tested methods on stopping cats from scratching the carpets.
i have 3 cats
i will be buying plenty of tall scratch posts/trees but what else could i do? i have seen sprays that encourage scratching in certain areas but does it actually work? how about something that will make them not go near a certain area?
thanks in advance

Citrus smells are supposed to deter them if you spray the area. I like the flat scratch pad things (the ones that are basically cardboard) and put them wherever the cat wants to scratch. A sprinkle of catnip encourages my cat.0

When I had my cat some years back, I got new carpets and leather furniture . It was the leather furniture that the cat was inclined to go for .I used to put cat nip into a sock and throw it around .
Also, I used to tell her off :rotfl:
Not much you can do tbh0 -

Some materials are more prone to being scratched than others.
We bought a new wool carpet for the stairs and landing - six month before getting an eight year old cat.
In the early days she would scratch it in several places, over time and use of a water pistol (indoor plant sprayer) it has gone down to one place.
My previous cat, at a previous address, would play on the carpet which had less pile so her claws didn't get caught in the wool pile. She only scratched one place - bottom step - two feet from scratching post!
HTHs - good luck.I used to work for Tesco - now retired - speciality Clubcard0 -
I have a few 'Natura' rugs from Dunelm, that the cats love to scratch....website says they're made of polypropylene.
One is laid out as a rug in the lounge, the other is wrapped around a shoe bench to provide 3D scratching fun.
The only other thing the cats scratched was the corner of my divan bed, but that seems to be boring now, so it's been left alone.....although it's still fun to attempt to open the drawers and climb in....yes, I had to cat-proof my bed.0 -
and if you get rid of the carpets, they will find something else.
You will be sitting on plastic garden furniture within 6 months.
Get rid of the cats. :-)0
