EU banks are not taking Brexit risks seriously enough, warns BoE
European banks are underprepared for Brexit and could lose access to the City of London if they do not move quickly to apply for a UK banking licence, a Bank of England committee has warned. Officials at the Bank are pushing lenders to sharpen up their contingency plans as their branches in Britain could lose the right to operate after March 2019.
This is crucial both to the UK and the EU economies as London is the centre of European capital markets.
If foreign banks lose access to Britain - because their regulations cut them off from funds and banks outside the EU - it risks causing immense disruption to the continent, starving businesses of the funds they need to invest and grow.

    I like this headline

That's the closest we've got to any commentary/discussion in pages of spam. Can you keep them all to a single post, or, I guess, comment on them?

Posting links without any comment is definitely spam, I don't blame others for reporting them.

It's nice to see there's progress on WTO quotas, but do you care to express any sort of opinion about it?

Now I've got the 2 big things out the way for the day and before I get on with something else, something has come up that I'd like opinions on. This is in a small way related to Brexit and future trade, while largely being related to wider issues.

In the course of looking at something else this morning, I stumbled upon someone saying about older diesel cars from Europe ending up in developing countries and their concern for it. I can't find the comment/article in my browsing history now to give a link.

My personal belief is that it would help the economic development of those countries, with potentially cheap (and largely unwanted) older vehicles being readily available for use outside the EU. This is especially apparent in the commercial vehicle sector where the driving down of prices for pre-2002ish vehicles would also help some people closer to home get their foot on the ladder. I'm talking stuff that is reasonably worth no more than about £1500 now, and at £500 would enable businesses to be started that at the current £1500 price point wouldn't be attainable.

There is concern from a group however (and I don't know how big this group is) for the environmental impacts that this may have on these countries.

Now, I do care about the environment however I don't see the point in throwing perfectly good used vehicles away when they could be put to effective use elsewhere just because they're not running on the newest or most efficient technology.

So, is the general view here that the environmental impacts of such a scheme would be too big, or that it would help other countries be in a better position to trade with us in the long run? Remember that this could create a new market for British parts suppliers (as a good number of older vans on the roads were built in the UK) in answering this.

I'm tipping towards the economic advantages for third countries, but would like your thoughts.

A fair amount of the environmental damage will have been done before they hit a price that low, especially with vans which hold their value better. £500 vans are likely to be 15+ years old with 200,000+ miles on them, and probably only have a short life remaining.

So it'd be inclined to keep them on the road a little longer to help the economy, it's probably not worth investing in any upgrades to make them cleaner (such as biodiesel or LPG conversion).

I think it's likely a UK issue because of the culture and weather (causing rust) - cars here are deemed old by 5 years (well out of lease period) and the values drop pretty steeply, but in Europe cars are kept much longer and hold their value much more.

There's probably more can be done to export older vehicles to people who could use them, but remember the are wrong-hand drive for the majority of markets beyond India and China - quite handy for delivery drivers but a pain for everyone else.

    Conrad, it's spamming.
I'm all for free speech, argument and debate.
Spamming the boards with just links is not debate.
Don't blame me, I voted Remain.
