Ebay buyer wants to pay with Bankers Cheque..Ok?

Hi guys
Im after a bit of advice please. A buyer on Ebay wants to pay for 8 of my wifes items (the full collection) with a guaranteed signed bankers cheque. She only accepts Paypal generally. The buyer has purchased from her once before using Paypal but now says they cant use Paypal anymore. The items only come to about £50. The buyer states they have to spend a min of £50 as the bank won't write a chq for less and its cash taken from their savings account.
We havent had much dealing with bankers cheques and dont really know how to check for a fake etc. I have heard about scams with them and maybe we are being too sceptical but any advice would be gratefully appreciated.

TIA

Its best to treat them as a normal cheque and wait for cleared funds in your bank before sending goods out. Although they are in theory more secure than normal cheques they can still be stopped by the bank for various reasons.

Is it new or used stuff? People would be less likely to scam on used stuff.

And as RFW suggests wait until it's banked, once it's cashed ring the bank and confirm it's OK.
2p off is still 2p off!
  • Cheers, I thought we were being over careful.
Someone told her that it can still be claimed back even when cleared if it was stolen or fake, so was worried about that.
    PS The items are new

One thing you can do as I've done in the past is phone the issuing bank when they hand over the cheque and ask the bank whether they've issued it or not.
If they've nothing to hide they shouldn't mind you doing this in front of them.

if anything you are right to be cautious, its better to be safe than sorry, also I would check on the cheque is due to clear with the bank.

If they are a geuniune buyer, they will understand x

its very unlikely that anyone has gone to the trouble of using a fake bankers draft for 50 quid. (anythings possible of course).

Well there are forged pound coins in circulation!

There was a recent case of some stolen pre-signed either bank or building society (can't recall which) blank cheques being stolen.

Some banks have been known to not honour 'guaranteed' cheques.

Bit rash using one for a mail order purchace though, afterall the seller has your address.

That's how fraud works, if you do quite a lot at once and then leave the address.

It is very unlikely in this case though.
