(Italy) Rome and Lake Garda possible?

Hi Guys

We were looking at doing a possible split holiday, doing 4 nights in Rome and then going to see Lake Garda and staying there a few nights too.

I can see it looks like you can get a train from Rome to Verona which is 2hr 50 mins and about £60pp.

Is there trains/buses from Verona to Lake Garda? its sayd its 89 miles away.

would it be best staying in Verona or Lake Garda?

not sure if anyone has done this.

thanks

  • There is a train line from Verona that passes through stations in Peschiera del Garda and Desnzano del Garda at the southern end of the lake. It appears much, much less than 89 miles, more like 10

I've stayed in Malcesine (we flew in to Bresica and hired a car though), which is towards the northern end of the lake on the eastern side, and it was lovely. I saw buses travelling the road along the eastern side as well, so you can probably get to all the small towns that way, there are also tourist boats that you can get tickets for to do circular trips around the northern villages and hop on/off as you wish.

Where you stay will probably be more determined by what you want to do / see than anything else.

5 nights in Rome may be too much, 3 nights may be about right.

I spent a week in Rome (seven nights) and didn't see everything I wanted to. Could have done with another week to be honest.

I'm one for going to art galleries, museums and ancient buildings etc, and Rome has loads of all of those to see.

Yes, there is lots to do in Italy.
A two centre trip with a minimum of 3 nights in each place could be good.

    Italian fast trains are good.

You're going to struggle to get a cruise which goes to Lake Garda & other places/countries - as the name suggests, it's a lake (albeit a very large one).

Having said that, my wife & I spent 10 days staying in Garda itself and struggled to see everything we wanted to in the area. As well as the lake you're close(ish) to Venice. Florence isn't too far either (although I'd recommend staying a night there as it's a long journey to go both ways in one day).

Verona is a day on it's own and, as you're so close to the Dolomites, a day in the mountains is a must.

Yes, there are regular buses from central Verona to Sirmione. I did that journey some years ago, but it was no more than about 45 minutes then.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

    thanks guys

Would you say doing a 7 days stay and getting a flight to Rome for a 4 night stay then travel to Verona for a couple of nights stay and get a couple of day trips to the lake would cost a lot of money, would I be best just doing a 5/6night stay in Rome and going the Lake on a different holiday?

I would suggest two holidays, because Lago di Garda and the surrounding lovely countryside is worth a week - at least. I also think that Rome is worth a week - at least.
Ideally, I would plan a two week trip to see both, that way you can take in other places - Florence, Naples, Venice, Bologna.
Having said that, we drive, so that we can stop off in the interesting other places, before reaching the main destination.
