Lanzarote car hire

3 questions... do we need the code, and can you only get it 72 hours before driving?

Are there good/bad car hire companies to go for? I've heard bad things about being stung for insurance when you get there, so is it better to get car hire when you are there?

  • I don't know anyone that's hired on Lanza that has ever been asked for a DVLA code although no harm in getting one, just in case. They're valid for 21 days. . Pre book car hire online with a local reputable company before you go. It will be cheaper than walk up. The island is very busy so leaving it until you get there you may not get much choice. None of the local companies will sting you for anything. Global companies like Avis, Hertz probably will and they'll be more expensive. Avoid Goldcar and Orlando as well.

Check Cabrera Medina/Cicar, Autoreisen and Plus Cars. All good companies with no hidden extras or shonky fuel policies.

I've used Cicar. They were good... even after I wrecked one of their cars in an RTA (not my fault).

I've never been asked for a code or the paper counterpart when hiring a car abroad.

I spend 3 months every year in Lanzarote in one month periods and have had a lot of hire cars there over the years .The best in my opinion is Autoreisen . No hidden extras. No pressure selling of extra insurance.Reasonable quality cars with no hassle pickup and return. I go back on Sunday have ordered Citroen C4 automatic at £403. for 4 weeks rental. Avoid Orlando cars ,poor quality and customer service. Big internationals very expensive.
Best to book online. Don't usually ask for code.

Used Autoreisen twice with no problems, although on the second occasion car was supposedly supplied with full tank of fuel and on arriving in resort we found there was only half a tank.My own fault for not checking more carefully.Didn't feel so bad then when my wife backed into a post!No real damage and no comebacks.Wonder how we would have fared with Goldcar?

I have used Autoreisen but in Tenerife and no problems, but when in Fuerteventura I went with Cabreramedina, who are the parent company of Cicar, the car standard, service and price were great. Booked direct and pick up at airport, no extra money demands made. They cover Lanzarote.

It was based on reviews only but would use again
