Amsterdam accommodation for 3 twentysomething lads

hi there my son and 2 others are thinking of going to Amsterdam for the first time in September for 4 nights.

What would be a good area for them to aim at for looking at accommodation - I'm thinking self catering might be better value than a hotel but having never been myself I don't know where to start really.

I think they will be doing a bit of everything sightseeing-wise (!) so somewhere central would be great if not too expensive.

Would appreciate any recommendations. Many thanks

Have a look at a good hostel, they may be able to book a triple or quad room with its own bathroom.

I stayed in de Wallen (the red light district) recently. Don't be put off! They've really tidied that area up -- it's becoming quite gentrified with fancy coffee shops (er... the ones that sell coffee) and sandwich bars. Very central, and a beautiful part of the city. Perfectly safe.

The area round the Leidseplein is a bit more spacious -- not such a magnet for stag parties.

Previously I stayed in hotels, but last time we stayed in an Airbnb. Not sure about the ethics of Airbnb, but it worked out cheaper than a hotel and much nicer.

I wouldn't go self-catering if you can afford it -- there's so much great food in Amsterdam! The food is one of the highlights for me.

Personally, I always try to avoid Amsterdam on Friday and Saturday nights. There are just too many dumb tourists -- groups of English lads being rowdy, etc.

If you can bear the queues, the Van Gogh Museum is well worth a visit. I had no interest in art until I saw how ground-breaking Van Gogh had been in breaking the artistic conventions of the time.

It may not be advice that will work with 3 lads but when I went to the Van Gogh Museum in June I arrived at opening time and only had to queue for about 5 minutes (I was there last year in April and by late morning the queue was much, much longer - I went to the Stedelijk Museum instead, no queue at all).

I'd bet that 3 lads don't do much sightseeing.

his friends seem to be dragging their heels apparently so he's thinking of going on his own. i'm thinking it will make the accommodation much more expensive as a single traveller but will have a look.
