Compensation determined by arrival time at USA port of entry?

We were flying from Heathrow to Fort Myers via Charlotte in USA.
The first AA flight was an hour late leaving and we missed the connecting AA flight and were 4 hours late getting to the final destination.
AA is telling me compensation is determined by the arrival time at the United States Port of Entry which was only an hour late and so we are not entitled to compensation of the overall 4 hour delay. Can anyone confirm this as I can't find anything to confirm or deny this point? Thanks

Assuming the flights were all AA and booked as a single journey?
The Supreme Court are currently deciding judgement on connecting flights outwith the EU where delay occurs.
It amy be sensible to await this decision later in the year. It may have considerable bearing on your case.If you're new. read The FAQ and Vauban's Guide
