  • DS is 18 this year and the only thing lined up so far is I will meet him from school and buy him his first alcoholic drink in the local pub!

An expensive bike computer - what he really wanted.

A friend bought their son a personalised number plate for his car which I thought was a brilliant idea!

Mum bought DS a watch, I was worried it would just get shoved in a drawer but a year on he wears it every time he is going out somewhere.

We gave our son money for both 18th and 21st. For his 18th it paid for his holiday away with his friends, not sure what he did with the money for his 21st.

I asked husband - all sons will get watches on 18th even if they have one or more already.

Clearly I need yet Another savings pot.

We asked ours what they would like for their 21sts and got them that.

I remember for my 18th (in 1975) my grandparents got me an expensive and truly horrible watch. I didn't need or want another watch and certainly not that one.
  • Whatever you do, make sure you do something you can do for any siblings in the future.

I bought myself a numberplate for my 21st - it still makes me smile years later. For my 18th, I bought a rare scupture made out of the stone from my hometown so that I could take home to university. It has moved house many times with me and I love it.
If there is someone who they don't see very often and would be extremely pleased to, perhaps organise a surprise. Two family members (who I adore and don't see enough) woke me up on my birthday morning having driven 200 miles to see me. That is the thing I remember.
  • We got our son a nice watch for his 18th and then again for his 21st, he likes a nice watch, one has a leather strap, the other a bracelet type.
For his 18th we also got him a football top from the year he was born, got his name and age on the back of it, he was over the moon with this.

I took my son (an F1 fan) for an experience day tour at Silverstone. It wasn't a driving experience although you can do these, it was just a vistor tour with a guide etc. There was about 20 people on our tour in total. It was very interesting, enjoyable and informative.

We got our son a lordship of Sealand for his 18th and he was very impressed at becoming a Lord ;)

Driving licence and lessons for their 18ths.

21st: Hip flask for DS3. Watch for DS1? Hard to remember ...

Godfather bought a set of four Escher prints each for DS1 and DS2, but DS3 didn't want that, so godfather got him a watch.

I think DS2 had some nice Go stones for his 21st. Similar to the chess set, something he will use forever if he keeps playing.
