My son is 18 earlish next year and I haven't even given it a thought yet.

Something he once received as a christmas present was a themed chess set, that's something you could keep for many years if you wished to.

For both my 18th and 21st I received jewellery and at 50 don't own either.

My 21st bracelet, I took in for repair, lost the receipt and never got it back. My 18th it stopped fitting so I weighed it in with other unworn gold I had and used the money towards a computer, which in turn helped me find a much needed job.

..However, as they invariably get accidentally left in the shirt in the washing machine, I think I'll give them a miss.

He doesn't have to use them on a daily basis, it's the thought that counts.

Money towards what he said he wants - the fancy gaming computer.
  • I think an experience as someone said above.
Not everyone's cup of tea but for my 21st my parents bought me a bird of prey falconry day in the Yorkshire dales. It was on a little farm in a hamlet. My parents could come too and observe. Hands down one of the best days I've ever had!

Gave my son the Senior Driver experience for his 40th, he loved it. Everyone knows we never grow up, right ladies?

It's when you are traditionally given your own key to the house. i.e. You are a proper grown up.

    It's confusing, we make a fuss being 30, 40, 50 etc but not 10 or 20.
