  • The fact is the local guy can hardly speak english and that doesn't give me much confidence on warranty and they will use new pvc rather than recycled

I think safe style offer looks attractive with 24 month buy now pay later.

how can I check when they were in business .
company house shows their business name as PLC which means they should be on stock exchange .this happened in 2013 but they claim to have been around for 25 years so how can i check them when they were ltd

it is a bit fishey when the company registration and investor details are not on their website

can anyone setup a public business?

one question is , is there an independent body that will come out and confirm they have used A rated glass ? They could be using a crap X rated glass rather than A and I will never know

Stranger12, are you sure the Council is asking you to change every single window upstairs, that seems a bit OTT to me?
  • Yes needs to have fire escape and all windows have small
    Opening

A bit daft as first thing you do in fire is break the window than thinking oh god this will cost me 200 pounds so i better die

You've been watching too many films!

A double glazed unit is not easy to break.

Unless of course you have installed suitable emergency hammers next to each window, but I'm sure that asthetic would be worse for you!

This is not correct. There is a minimum legal size for an egress window. If a window is too small for egress then you have to discuss with the council enlarging the window opening, or deleting the egress requirement. None of this should be onerous, and all of this should not be a surprise. It is all part of the discussions and consultation that should have occurred before you started your building work.

I have had the discussion and been told it needs to be done and to be fair i don't mind doing it as it will change the house look

    Re safestyle, any experience here?
  • If you employed a builder to knock down the wall and you are happy with his work have you thought about sourcing the windows yourself and getting him to fit?

If you are having other work done then your windows can be signed off under the Building Control Approval and checked by the inspector. It's only the glass that gets checked, but it's better than a FENSA certificate in my view as it's only the window company signing off.

I know that all the big companies inflate their prices. Safestyle, if plc, are having to pay their shareholders as well as for their ridiculous adverts. And their sales staff commission.

If you didn't like the one local person, find another. I wouldn't have even approached the large companies for quotes. The fitters are anonymous beyond the Safestyle name whereas local independents live and die on their name.
Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

For a balanced opinion consider Which Magazine. This did a detailed investigation into double glazing, around last August I think. Safestyle got hammered by Which, as did Everest and Anglian.

No sensible, discerning consumer should go to these companies, and Doozergirl is spot on with her comments. The Which advice was to use a local independent company. But be careful here, because there are companies you may think are local but they are, in reality, large players operating the same salespeople, commission and advertising rip offs you witness from the three names Which slated.
