Not sure why this isn't done? They have half done it by having zero tax for the cars with low emissions and the converse. Maybe the costs would 'drive' (sorry) all the transport firms etc out of business?
There would have to be tax breaks for businesses or prices would have to rise although businesses would presumably be keen to reduce their outgoings. VED also serves the purpose of registering cars. Maybe £10 VED for all vehicles to cover admin.
If it was done fairly, so the average car doing average mileage pays the same as they do now, it shouldn't affect the average driver. It would reward lower use leading to less pollution and congestion although I think it would be a brave government to increase fuel duty to even higher than it already is.

I will use the tube on occasion, but the bus is unpredictable and nearly every time I meet up with friends that are getting about on the bus, they are late.
The bus is OK for getting across Central London e.g. on the days I work there - I can get any of three buses from Charing Cross to where the office is - takes 20 minutes or walk in 25-28 minutes. So I walk if fine and bus if not. Tube would take 12-15 mins but I prefer the relatively fresher air and avoiding the crowds. Would I take it outside Zone 1 - only if all the trains are shut down by weather or terrorist alerts. I can do it with 2 or 3 buses but would take about 1h50 whereas train + walk takes an hour or so. My car stays parked in my home street at a cost of £10 per month - as I'm 10 minutes walk to my local station.
I need to think of something new here...

Fuel duty (unleaded and diesel) is already 57.95 pence per litre, then there is VAT at 20% ('tax on the tax').

Taking fuel at (say) £1.20 a litre, that is already 77.95p (64.96%) in tax per litre. Imagine only paying 42p a litre (cue 'oldies' and nostalgic posts :))

I know is this will blow some minds but, my household has 0 cars and no access to anyone regularly or even occasionally for lifts.

We manage, we have to. We moved here for better access to public transport.

Our circumstances include full time work, disability, frequent Hospital In & Out patient appointments, elderly grandparent living 25 mins away in the middle of nowhere etc.

It's not always easy but pretty much everything can be managed. We have a different way of going about things to motorists. For example you job seek alongside public transport routes. No other choice when you don't have a car.

Not as difficult as your situation, as I had relatives fairly nearby with cars, but we relied on bikes & buses for years. I used to do casual work as in my previous post further back & also some more-or-less full time locum work. It was more fun hopping on and off buses (lucky to be physically fit & well) than it is driving now, although I do as little as possible of that & a fair bit of walking/cycling/ bussing.

    would've . . . could've . . . should've . . .

Do we have to have these cheesy moral dilemmas posted by mods?

    They're naff and made up.

If they were real the people would just post themselves rather than email a mod

Zzzz... knew it wouldnt be long before someone whinged about the MMD. What exactly are you trying to achieve? Judging by the number of responses I'd hardly say they're all naff. And if occasionally they are made up, so what? Sorry, but bore off!! If you can't contribute to the debate then don't post. It really is that simple.

  • Dont be a tightwad. Pay for parking. It's a service. Someone whinged about having to pay £4 a day. £4 for a whole day is virtually nothing. Or get a bike and park that (securely) at the station.

Yes, of course you can park legally outside anybody's home so long as ther are no restrictions. But morally, think it's selfish. We've become a more selfish society and people like you aren't helping.

Not being a tightwad, looks at site name, saving £20 a week.

Assume 5 days a week if they are parking for work, that £4 per day would be over £1000 per year. Remember this is MSE...
