Great our local Budgens (less than 10 mins walk) is closing and being replaced by M&S.

I always remembers speaking to a Budgens store assistant, who told me that she never used her staff store card as the prices were so expensive. The store is already closed and good riddance to it. I am amazed that it lasted as long as it id.

The M&S store should be a reasonable size and include clothes. I am sure M&S will do good business locally. I and a lot of other locals are looking forward to it.

The local papers are saying that the Budgens staff are being retrained in local M&S stores before the new store is opened later this year.

There also job adverts in the press for new staff.

How is that going to be any different at M&S, hardly a by-word for cheap food pricing?

Just on the topic of M&S prices...I actually find them to be pretty terrific value for money!

The quality is hard to beat...and there are always special offers....the 'Dine In' offers are particularly good value...and the 3-for £10 offers on meat/fish

I recommend getting their store card...the 'Sparks' card which gives you special offers tailored to your previous purchases....and they are 'decent' offers such as 20% off certain items....or being offered a extra side-dish for free on the Dine-In offers.

They also do a good selection of their own 'basic' brand

In my sleepy little town, we have a choice of M&S or a really cruddy Tesco....to shop at Lidl/Aldi/Morrisons you need a car...Sainsbury or Waitrose is even further away....M&S gets my vote

Thanks. I will have to get a store card as I have a £70 gift card, which is increasing by £10 free month.

They usually get transferred across to the new company as someone else has suggested.

I wish we'd had an M&S replace our village Budgens, we have a terrible Sainsbury local that we barely use. They seem to cater for modern families and sell pizza, ready meals and booze.
I got all excited when a local butchers took over the shop next door, but they are selling ready meals and pies!

I think there are things in M & S worth the wee bit extra, the fruit and veg for example and I also like the 3 for £10 and their bread. The M & S I use is next to an Aldi so I get the best of both worlds. I love Aldi oatcakes.
