Agreed BG prices are a joke. However the 'bean counters' at BG have obviously calculated that losses from customers leaving, will be offset by those who remain on the Standard tariff.

Agreed. But I think MSE did such a brilliant job with that particular Collective Fix that it's unlikely I'll find anything better right now from a major supplier. That said: I was careful to opt only for a fix tariff without exit fees, this to give me freedom of movement in the next 12 months should another supplier come up with a better deal.0 -
You do realise that the cashback is still paid by EDF Energy/ the Merchant? The T&C you see that says it is paid by TCB is standard on all their cashbacks. It means that YOU are paid by TCB and not direct by EDF and therefore do not call EDF up to chase your cashback. TCB will ONLY pay you your £60 if EDF send them the money.
That all said, however, as a tariff with no exit fees, if they didn't play ball and another similar tariff came along, it wouldn't exactly be difficult to switch again...
Having looked at EDF it looks like it could be good for me (also coming off the Scottish Gas Collective Fix like everyone else here), so thanks for bringing it to my attention.
Yup. I do understand that. Which is why I mentioned it in my post. My understanding derives from the double aspect in play here: that yes, the merchant pays Top Cashback, and that yes, Top Cashback pays me. Question: which, then, is the most legally significant part of that arrangement? Answer: the promise made to me by Top Cashback. Not the merchant.
This was tested when SimplySwitch, in my experience an appalling outfit, delayed and delayed payment of £30 in regard to my switching via its Top Cashback offer. I had the entire transaction digitally recorded from start to finish but SimplySwitch claimed not to know anything about it.
Well, tough. My position in the matter was that Top Cashback promised to make the cashback. If it had a merchant -- in this case, an intermediary facilitator -- then it was, sadly, Top Cashback's problem if SimplySwitch refused to honour its commitment.
Top Cashback paid me what I was promised. As far as I'm aware, SimplySwitch never played ball with me, or Top Cashback, at all.0 -

If I switched to a cheaper energy supplier with no exit fee and then had communication problems as detailed many times on this website.
I could switch to another energy supplier and they are charged with the switch and there is nothing the former supplier can do about it?0 -

You can switch to a new supplier at any time, from any tariff*. The new supplier handles all of the details and you as a customer do not need to contact the old supplier, other than settle their final bill.
* That applies with or without an exit fee; if there is an exit fee it will be added to your final bill.0 -
Whatever happens to a new collective deal, it will be £5 less on cashbacks, as the £30 has now dropped to £25. Obviously MSE want to take a larger share.0
