Cost of Tiling

Any tilers out there that can help? I have a 12sqm hallway that I want tiling in slate tiles 600x400 12mm thick, with 13 linear metres upstand. Floor also needs levelling.

Have been quoted £850 to level the floor and £140sqm for tiles and upstand; total £3000 for 5 days work. The tiler refuses to give me a detailed breakdown between material and labour. Looking around, it seems a reasonable rate would be between £50-80 per sqm or £200-£250 per day. Feels like the guy is trying to rip me off.

Any advice?

Are you asking him to supply the tiles? I've never used a tiler that provided them. Grout & adhesive, yes. If you purchase your own, you'll better understand what you're getting.

If you've asked him for something that he can't provide before starting, then don't use him for labour & materials, simples.

If you feel you dont trust him then get other quotes..
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..
  • Yep, I'm supplying the tiles; my gut says avoid . .

Any tradesmen that ever got 'funny' with us over quotes etc, were binned instantly, the attitude was unprofessional and what that said to us was untrustworthy.

You're providing the tiles and he's charging that much? Wow.

12sqm of geometrics then reasonable but for off the shelf slate is ridiculous

Even if it's massively out of level this still should only be a shift, 2 days max to lay and a day to grout and seal .

Should be more like £1500 max

It's lakeland slate; there is some quartz running through it, but it's not a pattern that needs matching; all slates are machined to consistent size. Floor isn't massively out of kilter either, we were thinking around the £1800 mark.
  • £50-£80 plus mats is about right

Tilings one of them things you can do yourself with time, patience and a bit of know how. Have a look to see if there's any local courses
