It's not uncommon for people to be expected to spend a week or two away from home with work.
I think a couple of weeks is fine, indeed you could treat it like a paid holiday, a short break away!
If it became a longer thing, a secondment, then that would be another matter.0 -
Why not stay at the hotel, but then have your family come to you for one night, and you go home for another?0

I asked for some flexibility. I spent most of my day yesterday discussing the various options and it just wasn't working out. So I decided rather than go on and on asking about different options, enough is enough I'm not going. I knew I was putting myself in a very risky place but I don't regret it, well not now.
I don't regret my stance and how I handled this. However if they want to sack me for it, then I completely understand and I won't be blaming them.
Perhaps my former company were much better and more understanding because for them I must have travelled to Reading, Nottingham, London and Manchester at least 20 times in the time I was with them. But I never, not even once had any problems. Maybe the company I now work for is how they normally operate. But if it is, I may have to go back to my old company grovelling on my knees asking for my job back.0 -
I think your estimate of 3 hours to Kent was highly optimistic if you have to use the M25 at some of the busiest times of the day.0

Well I've got my letter of resignation ready, so if next week the big boss man gives me a call or I am asked to enter a meeting room, I'll be ready to give them notice before they fire me.0

Not sure why you even needed to tell them you might take family unless it needed a more expensive room/hotel.
The focus should have been on the trip and the deviation from what was discussed at job offer time and how often this was going to happen.
It's not looking like a great place to work if they need to be scraping around to get people to do these trips and then impose unreasonable condotions.0 -

It's a horrible place to work so far. 4 guys left the team in the last 4 months and looks like I'll be no 5. The crazy part about it is apparently they haven't learnt from their mistakes and keep repeating them. The expenses system is very slow and so sometimes people travelling are £300-400 out of pocket for well over a month.
I made a mistake leaving my old company, perhaps not my old role. But definitely leaving the company was a mistake.0 -
One pay cycle is acceptable any longer and the CC charges need to claimed.0

Presumably it would also be best to get a separate credit card purely for expenses as otherwise you would pay interest on all your own personal expenditure which you could have difficulty claiming back.0
