Flight cancellation

We were travelling from Glasgow to Las Vegas using United Airlines, we connected through Newark airport. Our connecting flight was cancelled due to weather and air traffic control. I waited 6 hours in a line at customer service to be put on standby for the flights the next day. While I was in the line flights were departing for LA & San Francisco why couldn't the Las Vegas flight depart?
I asked where we were to stay for the night and the united agent shrugged her shoulders! We didn't get on a flight until 7.39 the next day which eventually left at 10pm by this point we had been in Newark airport for 32 hours.
We are being told that we are not entitled to compensation because it was due to weather, we lost the first night in our hotel in Las Vegas

United Airlines thread please.
Starting your own personal thread makes if difficult for everyone to use the board easily.
But probably no claim for several reasons:
1. weather related.
2. Non EU airline in non EU country (the question of multi flight journeys with the same airline is currently under Supreme Court decision)
Outisde of EU, airlines generally not responsible for your welfare. If you're new. read The FAQ and Vauban's Guide
