  • Just ask him when he's coming back to finish it

Thanks for all your replies guys. I'm so disappointed, i went round this evening after a run of shifts after he text to say its all finished, which is why i've now posted the pictures

I'll be ringing him first thing in the morning. He did have an apprentice with him on some days but i was under the impression he was just doing the rolling etc. Seems like he was let loose to practice with the glossing brush!

I haven't paid anything yet so will be offering him the chance to fix it or be knocking a big chunk off. I'll keep everyone updated, thanks again

Agreed, but this also leaves items unanswered. The internal wall corners are diabolical and everything else appears poor. However that is not to condemn it. Here it depends what standard OP requested, and what price was a greed to achieve this standard. phil99 has asked the obvious question here, but we all remain in the dark because we do not know the answer.

The price agreed was £3200 for the following - I live in essex

Preparing walls, making good coving that was cut away for rewire etc

2 Bedrooms - ceilings painted walls cross lined and papered
1 Bedroom - 1 wall cross lined and papered, 3 walls painted and ceiling painted
Upstairs hallway, stairwell and downstairs hallway - Ceilings, coving and walls painted
Large living room - Ceiling painted and walls painted, 2 walls cross lined and painted
Adjoining Dining room - ceiling painted, 1 Wall papered, 1 wall cross lined and painted

All woodwork glossed - 9 doors in total and 1 radiator cover and fire place surround

He supplied lining paper and paint, we supplied wall paper

Work started on 31st July and "finished" yesterday. First week it was just the original guy, 2nd week his mate was there but it seems like after speaking to my wife the main guy wasn't about much that week and then they have been "in and out" this week

Having written all this down and being presented with a massive bill for shoddy work has really caught me out. I have been a avid member of this site for years and sometimes read posts thinking "how can people get caught out like this" I usually check everything to the Nth degree, sit there with YNAB working it all out etc

He was a recommendation by a trusted family friend and I suppose I sat there assuming it will all look better once it was all finished :(

    Lots of lessons learnt unfortunately.

Looking at the pictures again, I'm afraid this won't be easy to fix.

Most of the 'slop' seems to be white gloss on top of coloured emulsion - so you/he can't just paint over it, as it won't stick properly.

Lots of sanding down and re-painting will be needed to get a good finish.

    Grab the popcorn

Phoned him about an hour ago, asking if he could come back as we had some concerns.

He asked what the problem was and I said about the gloss edging and cutting in specifically among some other things. He immediately became very aggressive saying it was the plasterers fault (when half the rooms weren't freshly plastered and he cross lined them!) and that he couldn't get a straight line as the doors and woodwork we're not new!

He had no answer to why there was a centimetre of gloss paint on the emulsion work

As soon as he started speaking he was rattling off excuse after excuse and at the end of it said "fine i'll come round and paint over it later then"

We're meeting him at 12 and luckily my architect uncle (who also has decorating qualifications) is down in the area this week so he is meeting us there too

    Wish me luck
  • Best of luck . Was all the work shoddy ? Sorry if I've missed something .:o
  • Good luck indeed.

It never ceases to astonish me how people that are "in the wrong" in any situation instantly get verbally agressive any time one calls them on it.

I think cowboys/other louts/etc must work on the basis of "Attack is the best form of defence" with just how often they react that way.

    Keep us posted.
