I hope you get to go on your holiday with your DD. That is such a brilliant goal for you to aim for. Where were you thinking of going? I am also pleased that my post has helped you in some way - that has made me very happy. I have tried to explain what is going on clearly so that one day it might help someone else too - I do talk alot so apologies if my thread is very war and peace!!!! :rotfl:

    My short term goals are
From now until December I am not buying anything like clothes, only because I dont need anything. I have sisters and sister in laws that I can borrow off, if i need to feel I have something new on...although I am laughing as I write this, as I never ever go out, all I have in my diary is a christmas do and that is it! I used to go out ALL the time, but now I just like staying in! So not buying clothes is actually quite easy now.
Beauty products - I did buy loads and I spent a fortune on stuff - this is not needed because i have massive stash of it - so no beauty stuff till my review.

Hi, popping to say hi before I start work, its great to work from home, just have to walk upstairs!

My daughter is obsessed with all things Japanese/Korean and would dearly love to go there, so instead of the usual Majorca or Greece, I would love to take her to Japan. I would love to go to sunny spots in Europe but am happy to wait until she is independent and we have money!

I am so with you re beauty products...but as my DD says...I am good at buying them but not good at using them! Which is worse than buying them. I have wonderful products but never use them consistently. So no more products for me. As for clothes, well I have loads waiting for me to lose weight so can't justify buying more. If I lose weight I would have a great number to choose from.

Your goals sound great and I think coming on here to update really helps and I am another one for writing war and peace so don't you worry about it. It really is very inspiring. I think it just helps to keep you focused. Have a good week

    Hi there,
yes coming on here is def helping me!
Japan, that is very interesting, and it can be your goal for the future.
If you cant manage it when you are debt free, then you can do something else and at least you have been somewhere together, if you like city breaks, you could try somewhere interesting like Rome, Barcelona etc and do short breaks?
Now beauty products, hair products make up are my absolute weakness, I just love them and I can use them with ease too!
Like a famous make/brand not sure if I can write it, and its 120.00 for a pot of it and yes I have bought it and yes it is gorgeous and no, I am not rich enough to buy it and have really reflected on all this buying
I have found a really nice moisturiser actually and its lovely and works even better and will last me about 6 months and it is really nice. I have enough 'stuff' to last me to my next review anyway so you can imagine what I have been buying!!
Diet and fitness is what I love, in fact, I absolutely love the gym. About 3 years ago I joined a popular slimming class, not sure if I can put the name of it on?
And anyway, sat there, took about 10 weeks I think at 5.00 per class and they said I reached goal...I still felt out of shape.
So the next day, and dont forget I had no concept of money at this time and I had separated from my husband and basically thought I could just do what I wanted really. I joined the gym and met a personal trainer she said that i was skinny fat, and I did pay her a lot of money in fact I cant post what I paid it makes me cringe! The money i paid was worth it in the end and it was hard work but I learned not just about weight I learned about food, the right food and my whole concept of it all changed the way I thought, and what was at first vanity and getting slim for my 40th, has turned me into someone that just feels healthy. I would not be able to tackle what my family is going through if it wasnt for strong mental health!
The whole, I am not doing weights as it will make me look bulky, just proved me wrong when I literally went from a size 12 and weight 9 stone to a size 8/10 weight about 10 and half stone and yes I did put the weight back on as my muscles are heavier but not much more weight and so the food and gym are the love of my life in terms of my hobbies! What I did notice though was that the clothes I had once fitted into, just looked awful on me and its because my whole body shape changed for the better though!
I mainly wear my suits for work but then I am in lounge wear then, dog walking stuff so for my clothes I dont need anything yet....It is not to say I want things, but right now, I also want this debt to be gone!!!

  • Hi guys,
Not sure how this is going to pan out, but I was reading through some old paper work yesterday, i was off work and I seem to remember at the time of me getting this particular car in 2005 ringing for advice as i had a baby and it was a struggle due to mat leave pay.
I came on here yesterday and logged into the ppi part and i have logged a ppi claim.
My understanding is that i was sold this insurance and that I was told that if I didnt take out this insurance I could not have the car (so this is my mis sold part) I think, but then when I did need to get some help, I was told that mat leave was not covered. I actually remember the conversation at the time and me going mental asking why I had the insurance in the first place, also further into this, I also had an insurance on my credit card and on my sofa and for the same reasons when I went on mat leave, I couldnt use it for it not being covered!!!!!
So I have logged a PPI complaint.
ALSO, I was talking to my financial advisor friend last night as I mentioned this to her, and she also mentioned that when she was doing my figures that i have this thing with the bank where by I pay a fee every month and it is supposed to help me like rewards.
I have never used this service and again to get my overdraft I was told to get this account and then I could have the over draft.
I have now got rid of this 7,400.00 overdraft and just to add that the hassle I had to go through to get rid of it was unreal, like they wanted me to keep a debt that was just too tempting and although the lady at the bank, was in fact, just doing her job, as I was explaining that I never use, it she used tactics like, what if you ever needed it,what if your boiler broke, what if you had an emergency, which just annoyed me in the end.....so the over draft is now gone....it is at 150.00 as I have only ever used this much but as I type this I feel annoyed and i might just close it off completely.
My friend has drafted me a very strongly worded letter, with lots of legal jargon in it and i have now emailed this across.
I have had this account since 1999 and so I have had this reward amount coming out of my bank for this long under the belief that i had to have it for the overdraft.
I honestly do not understand this side of things, but I am sure I will hear something back from them soon.
    To be continued........

I know exactly what you mean about the luxury beauty products - I am a great one for these and I would think nothing of paying a £120 for a pot....on the credit card of course as then you don't feel it - HA! Of course, it's a bloody trick because I end up paying for years on something that is perishable. It's laughable. But what is worse is that I do not use the products - they just sit there, hundred of ££ worth of products. Right a pact then, I will faithfully do my face morning and night. And report back to you all on MSE! At 41 I should be looking after myself better! Of course, I do also buy for DD - she is very good about using her products and again, I won't let her use cheap stuff, so I do spend loads on her but as she actually does use it, I don't feel so bad, and mostly shop from B00ts so at least I can sometimes pay with points. So I have never understood why we can't name the shops? Or mention the brand or company...I don't get that, its not like we are advertising? Maybe someone can tell us both!

In terms of your gym, it sounds as if this has been a real success for you...the point is that even though it cost a pretty penny especially with the PT, the fact is you fully benefited from it and so it was not a waste, unlike me who has had several gym memberships over the years and never bothered to go! I have many stones to lose and I suck at sticking to anything. But really need to get myself sorted.

Oh this sounds very promising indeed, it sounds as if you could really be entitled to money back so well done for getting this far, keep us posted as to how it goes. Unfortunately or fortunately depending on how you look at it I have never had PPI as far as I know, so no possible pot of money for me boo hoo.

So glad its payday, although nothing is really going to happen today, most of the DD are set for tomorrow, so for today at least my bank balance is really healthy, but not for long! Have a good day, chat later

  • Hi
Had a reply from the what I now know as mis sold reward charges from my bank. They are looking into it.
Another company when I bought my sofa have replied.
I've had a reply back off my car loan....
I'm impressed at how quickly this has happened too.
Just going to wait now at if I'm owed anything.

    Money spent this week.....
Set aside money 250 uniform. Which is actually my daughters account which I don't touch.
    38.00 shopping at aldi
    12.00 laundry, cleaning products.
I had to buy my lunch through the week at 2.60 which I really didn't want to do, but forgot my lunch, then thought I'd have it for tea, but got home and my dogs had eaten it!!!
So spending is very much improved from previous months, this diary is proving valuable to me now.

Just going to wait and see if I get any extra money from my recent enquiry.

    Have a great weekend.

  • Hello all.
A really hectic couple of weeks.
A delay in my snowball, an urgent meeting with financial adviser, oven blew up, builders here putting on a new roof.
Ppi money back and so just a very quick update and as soon as I can I'll be putting on my snowball for this month and what's happened over last two weeks.
The positive is my spending diary I'm super proud of it!

  • Hi just caught up with your diary... WOW!
    You are super organised :D
I know you say that you do not understand a lot of what your advisor friend is telling you about your finances, however, as this progresses and progresses well I'm sure you will begin to pick it all up.

I have subscribed and will follow with interest

It is important that we know where we come from, because if you do not know where you come from, then you do not know where you are, and if you don't know where you are, then you don't know where you are going. If you don't know where you're going, you're probably going wrong.

  • Awww thank you for that. Let me start by saying its not easy, but it's taken me a while to get going, but I'm onto it now.
I'm just finding it hard as the financial advice at present is telling me to pay myself first, so a grand in the case of the insurance premium, the car the house for its servicing, Christmas, birthdays etc....as I had nothing set aside at all. I basically owed myself this. In the new Year I'll be straight to really go hard at it. At present, I'm getting into habits, the spending diary has gone from spending loads to just spending what I'm supposed to do. I thought it would be hard, I'd be lying if I wasn't a bit shocked at first, but now, my whole outlook has changed, I feel brilliant. I just don't have a lot of patience and really want to start it, but I'm being assured that what I'm doing, is the right way.
I can't pay now on snowball to debts as my oven broke and so did my roof.....so I'm paying this off now as though it's another debt, a shame, but I need an oven and we need a roof, but once I reach my next review in December, I will be straighter, the set aside will be paid as it should and the new Year, I'll already be in the swing of it all......
I'll be able to pay in as much as I can then and hopefully I'll be debt free in no time.
It's definitely made me think of money better!
Thank you for subscribing too.

  • As you'll see (if you have been following my diary on here ;) ) I think have developed a better understanding of money management and cash flow since I started on my MSE DFW journey.

I budget for everything, if I cannot afford it outright at the moment then I save for it...
Surplus from my allocated budgets gets filtered into savings.
I do surveys to supplement my savings too.
I have cut back to the basics for everything I need.
I bake my own treats, I mostly cook from scratch with fresh ingredients and I brew my own beer.
I buy what I need as I need it.
    Very MSE lol

It is a good way to be and hopefully by doing what you are doing now you will be instilling good money sense into your DD for the years ahead too

Morning, sorry for the late reply, we had a birthday this weekend so got quite hectic!
I have to say that since starting this, I was spending money like it wasnt precious and now I see that it is, and its better being in my bank than in say, Tesco's when I just nipped in for milk and ended up spending over 60.00 nearly every time on rubbish!
I have lost a couple of pounds in weight too because I am too, making my own things, I am being more prepared with my food and I am enjoying it. I dont bake my own treats but that is because I really dont know how to bake - I should learn really the most i have ever made is a cake but at the moment I have no oven so cooking everything in the slow oven.
In terms of this and when I have started, my spending diary is what I am extremely proud of, I used to spend a fortune on nothing but now I am sticking to my budget.
My friend has had to re jig all my figures until December but she did say, that had I not started this and got into good habits, the roof, the oven would have just been left and I would have never got it sorted out.
I will say that although a 3 grand roof and an oven has to now be paid out of my snowballing, at least it is being done and when it comes to January I will be in good habits, paid myself set aside money and I will be ready to go hard at it.
On here too, I have had private messages and replies back with so much help and I couldnt have done it without people offering the advice - which I have listened to every piece of advice offered!
One thing I did do before was give money away, I also used to buy a lot of food for the homeless charity but I am not allowed to do this anymore, but what I have done is, is sign up to the charity and I am working there over Christmas, I think I am serving food, but not sure yet as I start my training next month a couple of us are doing it so it should be OK.
So that is going to show my dd too about charity work and helping out!
I will go over to your thread and have a read! I might learn how to bake off you too!
    have a great week
