Yes - a key will be required to use the program - unless it was a hacked version ...
You may find that you have a trial version - which will expire after a month or so/0 -

Which allows you to download Office 2016 from MS for less than £10 - if your employer has an agreement with MS0 -
Just buy a volume licence key from somewhere like Kinguin. Grey market - maybe. But that doesn't mean they are dodgy keys. It just means instead of being shipped on a pre-installed PC, the vendor is selling the keys off separately.
Much cheaper and no having to jump through BS hoops with MS.0
