Unlocking Nokia Lumia 520

Hi I have a sim only contract with O2 on my current phone, and have been given a Nokia Lumia 520 which is locked possibly to vodaphone network (my partner can't be sure).

Is there any way of unlocking this so that I can use my O2 sim as it has all my contacts etc. on plus I want to keep my number. Is this possible without paying a fortune to get this done?

Get the previous account holder to contact the old network and request the unlock.

To be frank, If they "can't be sure" it sounds like a phone bought in a pub, how can they not remember who they paid their bill/bought top ups from?

  • My partner is not tech savvy and has memory problems following a car accident so it's understandable that she can't remember as she hasn't used the phone for about 3 years.

Well, they'll have to remember or you'll need to get a sim from every network and keep trying till you figure it out...

  • Why do I need to get a sim from every network? This doesn't make sense to me and you haven't explained why this would be necessary. I am not going to badger my partner about something that she won't remember.

Hopefully someone will explain this so that I can understand.

Seems obvious to me. If you don't know what network it was on, then you beg, steal or borrow a sim from all the networks till you find the network that it is locked to.

Then you contact the network to unlock it.

Or, try your luck with a guy on the market who unlocks phones for £10
  • Thanks - think I will go into my local phone shop and get them to sort it out for me.

The unlock code is easily available, not only from the network, but you need to know the network the phone is locked to.

Get, free on line, sims from EE network, or Vodafone, self explanatory via Google

They are the main providers, I assume the O2 does not work in the phone

Once you have your sim and know which network you can go from there regarding unlocking

You should still be able to copy your contacts from the SIM to the new phone, or copy them to the old phone from the SIM and then over to the new one by Bluetooth.
Most modern phones store the contacts on the phone by default.
You can port the number from o2 to any network you like, including Voda, or an MVNO running on Voda (though I wouldn't recommend the former).
