Cash withdrawals - disabling the facility

  • Thanks for the posts, I appreciate this was a stupid question and mistake to make to some on here.

For info I have just spoken to Barclaycard and they have confirmed that you can block cash withdrawals which I have now put in place - so it's possible despite some saying it was not.

I do feel the question I posted does have some value. Some people may want to use a credit card to build up their credit record and resist the temptation of withdrawing cash, so putting this block in place could be useful in certain circumstances.

    Thanks again.

Yep it was a useful question!

I didn't see it until you got your answer. I remember years ago asking Barclaycard the same thing for the same reason - and they said it was possible. They qualified it at the time by saying if the ATM was "offline" it might still allow a withdrawal. I suppose it's rare these days for ATMs to be offline (and perhaps if they are they just go "out of service" when they are).
  • Its an easy mistake to make in a rush, i have visual issues and I did it many years ago with two silver cards!

I put a sticker on the front, and now get a jazzy/personalised card (currently pink and yellow) so i cant make the same mistake!

Good to know you can block withdrawals as I didnt know you could do this,

normally with credit cards when you put them in a machine you get a warning message saying about charges on the screen which should get you to double check which card you are using

Maybe credit card companies might take a leaf out of new start up bank starling as there latest update now allows multiple changes to the security aspect of your debit card, stop cash withdrawals, stop online, stop contactless and more.

Yes, and Revolut has been using these security features for well over a year already, including the ability to switch off ATM withdrawals. As it's obviously technically possible, and would prevent various ways to carry out fraud (for those who use the features), I fail to understand why all banks and credit card companies are not implementing this kind of thing. Perhaps the cost of fraud being committed is less that that of hiring competent app developers..?

Archaic systems, and minimal return on investment for implementing system changes.

Not a stupid question at all, some less than sensible answers though.

Using the same pin on several cards is not stupid either and can be more secure.
loose does not rhyme with choose but lose does and is the word you meant to write.
