Bedroom tax and universal credit

Hi Just a quick question re bedroom tax and private housing as a future universal claimant, if one takes a 3 bedroom house were the rent is lower than the Local Housing Allowance Rates, eg the 3 bed house is 460 and the housing allowance for to 2 bed room is 479.79 a month and the entitlement is for a 2 bedroom because we are a couple and our son lives with us, would one still deducted the tax for the extra bedroom? or would they pay the amount because it is cheaper then they would have to pay if we find a 2 bedroom house?

thanks

The so called bedroom tax does not apply to private renting.

Your local housing allowance is based on a 2 bed property and is the maximum amount that would be paid. That is your entitlement. If you are lucky enough to find a 3 bed place which is less than your LHA then great!

So, your LHA allowance is £479.79 per month and the 3 bed house is £460 - they would pay you £460 (presuming you are entitled to the maximum amount of LHA)
