Royal Mail

We have an empty shop next door to us, for the past few years it has been up to let, now it is up for sale. Numerous times our post has gone through their door, and we have (whilst the shop was up to let) got in touch with the landlord, who has retrieved the post for us. A couple of times, we did report complain to the Royal Mail and we were given a book of stamps for our trouble.

The shop is now up for sale, and has been for a while. We were waiting for DVD's which we can see have been posted through (doors are glass both top and bottom), and we have other post in there from past deliveries, i.e. Tesco Vouchers.

We reported this to the post office as a complaint on Saturday 05/09, and we were told they had until last Thursday to investigate this. We then rang them on Friday 12/08 to be told the notes on this had still not been updated, and that we should ring them again on Wednesday 16/08.

Is there anything we can do? Surely they should be ringing us to update us, as they misdirected the post, and we cannot get hold of it? Would it not be them that have to sort out the mistake? Should they not be responsible for trying to get hold of the estate agents to get them to come up with the keys to get the post out?

We have been told in the past when we made previous complaints about post going into the closed shop that they had put up a notice to notify the staff. Seems some Royal Mail postmen cannot read.

Why don't you go out in the dead of night and seal up the letter box for the shop?

So try contacting Royal Mail for a start....
Next, you have gone through customer service, did you previously contact the delivery office?
Given you are next to the shop, does the shop have a door no. on display and do you?

Locate the current owner. Explain the problem (with a photo of your mail/DVDs) and offer to keep an eye on the empty property if they let you keep a key to it.
  • The shop has a number on it, our house has a number on it. Which is a different number house number (so shop is 41A, we are 43). We have been in touch with the sorting office in the past, it works for a while, when we are back to this again.

When it was up to let, we would get in touch with the landlord, he lived about 8 miles away, and would retrieve the post when he was passing, as he would just stick a to let sign in the window, but now it is for sale with an estate agent, and he wants nothing to do with it.

We have photos of the post, and all the junk mail that has also gone through the door (we don't want the junk mail).

We did think about going out and sealing the letter box up in the middle of the night, but that won't help get back the post that's already in there at the moment.

Regularly visit the estate agents branch, make a nuisance of yourself asking them to accompany you to the property to retrieve your mail.
  • That would work, but I work Monday-Friday, may have to take the week off and do a sit in at the Estate Agents/Royal Mail sorting office to get this one sorted out.

If you are contemplating what you could do under cover of darkness, would you be able to reach your post with a litter-picker or a stick with Blu-tak on the end etc?

I had a problem with dimwit Amazon couriers leaving my neighbour's parcels in my garden. Some got ruined because, of course, I wasn't expecting them & didn't see them in the bushes for weeks. I complained twice to Amazon and ended up having to put a big sign on my gate telling them not to leave parcels there. ...so you could tape a laminated sign right next to the shop's letterbox saying "do not leave post for #43 here"?

Any chance you can get your Amazon deliveries sent to work?

Ah so the postman is delivering to 41, then preparing post for next door (43 in his head) and sticking it through 41A.
Sounds like a route without a regular postie.

What about painting 41A above, on and below their letterbox or sitcking it on with white and yellow insulating tape?

[STRIKE]Or get Amazon deliveries sent to a collection point as having parcels delivered to work can be an issue.[/STRIKE]

OP get onto the estate agents tomorrow and see about putting up a property number near the letter box as been suggested.
  • Any deliveries I "usually" get sent to either a collection point or to a family member who doesn't work. Unfortunately these are ones that we sent by someone else to me (they were supposed to be a surprise).

We just tried to get the grabber through the letter box, that didn't work (but we got a few odd looks from people on the street), but no helpful remarks from them.

I think once we get the post back, I will get 41A signs done, and stick them all over the door and letterbox.
