Yesterday a friend sent me a link of himself on a video. I clicked play before I realised that the video was not from him and that his account had been hacked. I then became part of the hack and in turn sent out to friends similar material.
Apart from that, everything seemed OK. During the night windows attempted to up date my comp. It failed and reset. Now when I boot up a lot of programs will not start, Virus and malware scans produced one problem which was sorted out but the problems are still there.
I cannot get to the settings menu to try a system restore. I cannot open the sound icon, I currently have no sound. However, I can get online. Any help please would be so useful.

I see you have scanned for virus and malware , did you run malwarebytes and ADW cleaner ?
Also, how did this "video" reach you . Was it via email, or a facebook link ?
Was it a link or an actual attachment ?
Also , when these programs "dont start" , what happens ? Do you get errors ?
If so, what do they say ?
(Bit more info needed to work out where the problem is likely to be)0 -
I clicked on the link. It asked me to allow an extension which I did. When trying to open a program nothing happens at all. Also getting warnings like this. " The application was unable to start correctly"0

What extension?0

Supposed to be a video extension. An online search showed nothing.0

That sounds grim .
Sounds like you've installed a dodgy activx component
Can you type in the search box ?
If so, type recovery and see if you can get into that menu
If not, then its going to be along the lines of safe mode, sfc /scannow etc0 -
Not letting me type so cannot do anything.0

Hi
Maybe F8 at boot up, safe mode as Andy says, and hope that the settings etc are available.
Windows .iso and do a clean install or use it as a repair console.
Any rollback options?
OK; File access using a browser file:///c:/
I typed C:\ as the address in Firefox and you get- file:///c:/ you can list by date and show hidden files/objects.
From there it is possible to navigate to sub-directories and maybe if you can find the files recently installed, F8 and command prompt and del c:\nasty.tmp.This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
