Suspiciously Pre-activated Sim ?

I've decided to take the plunge and change my mobile network provider. For many years I have been a PAYG customer with Orange (and I mean Orange not EE). Long story short I have plumped for Three's 321 because a) It's cheaper than the plan I was on and b) it's cheaper than the plan I was on.
I duly got my pac code, ordered a free sim and awaited delivery of said PAYG sim. I had a confirmation email to show the order had gone through (on Tuesday 1st), a 2nd email (Sunday 6th) to remind me to activate the sim when it arrived and a third email on Tuesday (8th) to say the sim had been activated and I should top it up. However I didn't receive the Sim until the Wednesday.
So should I be concerned that the simcard was already activated before I got my hands on it?
(I will mention that the envelope it came in was intact) Or are Three's PAYG sims already preactivated and I'm being paranoid?
Do not make any sudden moves.

  • You are being paranoid. The SIMs come "ready to go". Just top up and use.

Agreed, the last few sims I've had from Three have all been ready to go when received.

But Three's PAYG tariff is 3p per minute: http://www.three.co.uk/Store/Pay_As_You_Go_Price_Plans

    True.

But the op would if been on the same network / coverage.
Still saving lots and no 3G phone required.

The advantage of only needing 2G is not a good argument. Not only are 2G networks being phased out, with some countries already switching them off, but the "2G only" phones are likely to have a limited range of frequency bands compared to more modern ones.

We already see a difference with better "in building" coverage on the so called "4G Super Voice", and similar schemes, that simply isn't available on 2G phones.

Advocating 8p/min PAYG over 1p/min or 3p/min is a flakey argument at best. Even O2 at 5p/min is better value.

Though I suspect we'll see 3G go before 2G in the UK, the networks seem to have a policy of 2G/4G at present. Vodafone intend to reform their entire 2100Mhz 3G spectrum to 4G by the end of the year (many parts of the country are already done) leaving legacy users on an allocation of 2G/3G 900Mhz with rumours that they're also considering taking the 3G 900MHz to 4G in the future as well leaving only the small amount of 900MHz for 2G.
