We did 3 weeks in Oz last year split between 6 days in Sydney, 3 days in Port Douglas/Cairns, 4 days with family in Brisbane then another 6 days in Sydney, all arranged by me and all DIY. We used Virgin Australia for our internal flights, used booking.com to look for accomodation

If you are using Virgin Australia, do a search for voucher codes. It saved me 25% last time I used them. Generally use Expedia or Tripadvisor to find and book accommodation or just do a Google search on the destination to find places that don't advertise.

Don't forget that you can fly in to Perth and out of Sydney or vice versa. Seems obvious, but not everyone realises that it can be done.

Funny thing is when we've looked at cheaper long haul flights originating in europe rather than UK it's always the fact that we then have to fly back through LHR.
    What are we doing wrong.

Not sure what you mean, do you mean transiting through Heathrow or the ticket defaults to that?

Yeah, all the flights from Europe long haul to the FE seem to transit through LHR.
It's your money. Except if it's the governments.

Cathay Pacific and Singapore Airlines have flights from MANchester.

Scandinavia > Qatar > Australia tends to avoid London.

I loved Cottesmore beach area which is on the train line between Perh and Fremantle so you could visit both.

Yeah, certainly not true for the Asian airlines that are probably highest quality, and most European airlines would,go through their appropriate hub direct, so from Paris, Amsterdam, Frankfurt etc

There will be code shares that might go through Heathrow, coming back there should be the possibility of getting off at Heathrow, though may not be possible with checked in luggage.

    Emirates also fly from Manchester.

I am flying Manchester to Sydney later this year.
Then internal Qantas(Emirates code share as said earlier) flight to Perth.
On a cruise from Fremantle and finish in Brisbane.
Fly home from Brisbane and, as said above, this a classed as a return flight to Manchester and not 2 single flights.
