Cheque cashed for incorrect amount

Afternoon Everybody

Just after a little bit of advice.

Last week I sent 2 £15 cheques to the same company. 1 of them was processed as normal but the other one somehow managed to be cashed for £1500! Which of course managed to plunge my account way beyond the overdraft limit.

The company involved says theres nothing they can do about it until they have received a copy of the cheque from their bank. So is this correct or is there something that I can do too?

Thanks

Paul

Have you asked your bank for a copy of the paid cheque?

I'd speak to the bank, if the cheque was correctly made out by you for £15.00 in words and figures then either the bank has made an error processing it or it has been altered after you sent it, which is fraud.

By the way, the company's bank won't have the original cheque, that will have been returned to your bank, but they may have an image of it if they use OCR on incoming cheques.
  • So far my own bank has just said that its in the hands of the other bank as they must have cashed it for the incorrect amount, and its too late to put a stop on it as it has already passed through the system.

But your bank should be able to supply either the paid cheque or a copy of it?

    Example

That's nonsense. Your bank will have your cheque (or at the very least a copy of it). They will need to check that it is for £15 and then make a claim on the payees bank. It's very straightforward and you should not suffer and loss due to this error.

Your bank are fobbing you off. Speak to them. Ask to raise a complaint if they don't budge.

You issued a cheque for £15 and they've debited you £1500. The other bank's role in this is irrelevant.

Why didn't your bank return the cheque unpaid if it was taking you "way beyond" your overdraft limit?

Did you write it also in words ?
How many cheques have you written since, from that book ? The impression of the pen in the sheets below, should allow a reasonable copy to be lifted.

A cheque is an instruction to YOUR bank to make a payment ( to the bearer, a named person, or a named account ) ; the other bank "cashed" it, by handing that written instruction to them. Your bank, should be able to quote, your written authority ; for them to transfer £1500 to the other bank. They must have a computer image, or the sheet of paper itself ; else they have no defence.
  • Sounds like it has been wrongly keyed/encoded in the clearing system. Your bank need to ring their 'clearing house help desk' to raise a case. The clearing house will be able to see an image of cheque then if debited too much will be able to get funds back from receiving bank

I reckon that it was a data entry error where the typist didn't press on the fullstop /point key for long enough to print it.

Entering the word 'hundred' (no gap between 'fifteen' and 'pounds') and altering a decimal point would be rather obvious and should be initialled.
