Got a quote for florida villa renta using homeaway. Got a very good price for someone - it seemed they had a 19 day spare slot and we wanted 17 days rental.
So a few emails back and fore asking a few things. All this time there is a header on the email with dates etc. I even confirmed price and dates manually.
So I agree to rent fill out the booking form. Ask for bank details to pay. Suddenly guy tells me "sorry made a mistake, I thought the rental was 14 days so its going to be more". £250 more.
Nice try. Oldest trick in the book.
I'm an IT contractor and have seen this trick a million times before. Used to dealing with contracts, agencies and clients. Its a well known trick "client has had to drop the rate due to budget problems" = agent pockets more. Or "made a mistake with the rate" - agent pockets the difference. All done at last moment when its awkward to pull out.
Guy had plenty of time to check dates and price and too much of a co-incidence that he only noticed at the last moment. Seems after being happy he was renting his villa at short notice hes got a bit greed and tried it on.
Im sorry but in this case, even if it is a genuine mistake, you have to swallow it yourself.
Again, going back to business, if I incorrectly specify a rate (unless of course its blatantly a mistake) then I'd have to swallow it. There would be bob hope and no hope of getting it upped at the last moment.
There certainly are some chancers around. It was via homeaway and the guy even tried to get me to arrange the booking "offsite" to save his fees. Sure homeaway would be unhappy about this too.

Well I've not parted with any money yet so nothing is booked in effect. All they have is my emailed agreement and booking form but this was before he amended the price.
Not quite sure whether I'm going to just say sorry Im not booking now or leave it and let him sweat for a bit then pull out.0

What i meant, is say something like "Ah, well if thats the case then I dont think im interested at that price" - and see what he says ..ie call his bluff0

Have done. But to be honest I'm not sure if Im interested now in dealing with such a chancer.
There is an element of trust involved when you rent a villa. Theres the damage deposit that you trust the owner wont abuse.
If this guy is intent on getting a few more quid I can foresee issues getting my deposit back.0
