  • Anyone any idea of cost of adaptions such as a hand throttle?
  • This is where I'm getting the assessment done

TBH cruise control shouldn't be thought of as an adjustment as what you actually need is a hand throttle. This is now into the realms of an adapted vehicle so not falling under the employer's remit as a reasonable adjustment

You cannot categorically state this, if the vehicle is an esssential part of the job package then it may well be deemed a RA. Whether it would or not would depend on multiple factors, most of which we do not have the information to assess.

I don't know of the cost of adaptation OP, Google brings up some results who might be able to give you an idea of cost. You could say you own the car and want a quotation, they don't need to know you won't be using them. The assessment service may have an idea also.

Is it a large organisation that you work for?

I never stated categorically that it wasn't however I would love an example of an adaption such as this being considered reasonable.

There may be employers willing to do it if they have a virtually irreplaceable employee but I still considered that it would not fall into the RA category.. Even motability charge for this adaption in a lot of cases.
  • Hi,

Yes it is a large organisation.

Why would motability even need to have it classed as an adaptation? Many cars come with it in anyway so surely if someone was eligible for motability and needed it, they could just pick a car that had it? Or do they not get a choice?

Those that are eligible for motability can choose any car they want, if it costs more than the mobility award then there's money to be paid when collecting the car. Cruise control isn't an adaption, it's an optional extra. Some cars come with it, some don't depending on what spec, model of car you choose. I have a mobility car with cruise control., it's also an auto because of my disability. Cruise control is great on long distances but i'd never use it for everyday driving.
  • Do motability only do certain models if it's an optional extra then?
Any car I've had it in previously just had it based on the level of trim, I've never selected it as an extra but would if I needed to.

I haven't had much choice about using it for everyday driving, I'm pretty much using (or perhaps abusing) the speed limiter in the same fashion now. It's either that or I can't drive and therefore can't work.
I love my job and love my independence and just try and adapt what I have in order to make my life manageable!
I'm probably not supposed to use half the things in my house the way I do but it's either that or not be able to carry out tasks at all..

Cruise control isn't the adaption needed. What is required is hand control. It would be remiss if an assessor to suggest an adaption that was not designed or intended for the purpose you are using it for.
  • Hi Unforeseen,

Yes I get that now, thank you. That's what I am going to look into doing

As far as staying with the operational, that is not the way fleet leasing works. Vehicles need to be changed after so many years

I wasn't suggesting that they keep the old car, but stating that the employers knew that the OP could manage well with a car like the old one.

However, in a later post they have said that the cruise control had not been a specific modification, but had suited them.
