Car Hire Advice - Deposit

We are looking to hire a car for a long weekend in Italy - we are flying into Trieste (Italy) but will be going over the border to Slovenia. Prices are very reasonable, but the deposits are extremely high, around the £1,500 mark!
Does anyone know of any hire companies who charge lower deposits? My credit card doesn't have that kind of limit on it, I've hired cars in various countries over the years and typically have paid around the £500 level for the deposit, is this a recent thing or is it because it's Italy?
Alternatively, if I put a credit balance onto the card, would that in effect increase the amount available for the deposit?
ie credit card limit £1,000 and put £500 credit onto it, can I now use it for a deposit up to £1,500?
