What a nightmare for ordinary motorists. How are you supposed to keep up with where you're allowed to drive?

Drive at a speed suitable for the conditions to give you time to read them and open your eyes. If you have trouble reading roadsigns may I suggest an IAM course?

Why would you want to drive in the centre anyway?

So that you can experience the ecstasy of driving out and away from Manchester. Not many pleasurable events match that.

I drive into Manchester all the time, but you just need to know where you're going and where to park, taking the obvious route isn't always the best. The tram is great but it's very expensive when there's a few of you. It's cheaper in London!

Really? I went to Manchester in the Spring and the tram ride out to Prestwich was about £4 return - so no more than a Zone 2 or 3 train ticket.
First time I'd been there for decades and I agree that the tram system seems pretty effective and better than driving without local knowledge. I've not ridden Birmingham's trams so can't comment and I've seen Sheffield but didn't use them as it didn't make sense for the trip I wanted to make.
I need to think of something new here...

I never drive in to "town".
I either drive to fallowfield and jump on a bus for the last 5-10 minutes or I just get a train in.

You are completely right, there are too many chances to end up with a fine for one thing or another.

At least Manchester council runs free buses within town center!
Happiness is buying an item and then not checking its price after a month to discover it was reduced further.

Prestwich is about 4 miles from the city centre, when I was in London a few months ago I got a tube from Euston to Uxbridge and it was £3 or so, for a journey that must be at least 15 miles.

Yeah - but TfL zones are skewed by demand not by distance. I live Sarf of the River where Tubes fear to go!
