I have a Sage blender which I use for our daily smoothie mix, and it is great. Very powerful and the resulting drink is smooth as silk. It was about £80 at John Lewis, but I've seen them in Lakeland also for a similar price.

I have had a Bamix for about 20 years and it is fantastic. The quality is top-notch. It blends soups, makes pancake mix, grinds nutmeg, grinds flaxseed and although I haven't tried it, I am sure it will grind coffee beans.

Brilliant Islandmaid it seem to do the job,and it looks like I am going to get one .

Thanks everyone for the feed back, I'd rather pay a little more and get something that will do lots of things, and Bamix seems to fit the bill

this is a better site than Which, and its great to find folk who have tried and tested stuff in their own kitchens

I had one a while ago and found it really underpowered - so you couldn't really do things like ice, or coffee beans (or any of the other hard stuff you see in the ads). I also found that it didn't chop evenly, so for things like onions you'd end up with half mush and half big lumps. Mine didn't last particularly long, but really the only things I found it good for were liquids and chopping small amounts of soft-ish, fairly dry ingredients, like breadcrumbs, herbs or nuts. They may have improved a bit since I had mine but I honestly wouldn't bother - I'd save my cash for something a bit better.

I se there is the Blentec but they are far out of my price range starting at arounf £500 :):):)

I bought the Vitamix version (Pro 750) and to be honest it doesn't get anywhere near the usage it should to justify the eye watering price. I'd say for most people a 'normal' blender is just fine as the smoothie/soup thing quickly wears off..... well it did for me!

Hi Islandmaid, am I right in thinking it will grind spices too? I'm looking for a spice grinder but this looks like I could use it for many other things as well.

I'd say the same as Callie about the magic bullet. I made soup last week and couldn't find the drive shaft for my food processor so I used the bullet. I needed to blend the ingredients before the soup (it was a slimming world wannabe recipe), but the bullet wasn't great. It doesn't have the capacity of a normal blender for starters. It did the small tin of carrots in one go but not the large tin of beans or the large tin of tomatoes. It also did what Callie said to the pickled onions - I was left with a couple of large bits and some slices.

It's ok for houmous which my stick blender struggles with (well it is over 20 years old now) and for smoothies (which it was originally bought for) but it doesn't really have the capacity or the ability for anything big.
