Petplan - what to claim for?

Petplan do not increase premiums after claims, so claiming or not claiming wont impact on next years premiums.
So I guess they only increase for customers who don't make a claim then !!!This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

They don't increase based on you making a claim on your policy, that doesn't mean they don't increase. Increases will be based on the overall number of claims, as well as other factors - they are businesses, not charities, afterall.0 -
If a pre existing condition wasn't disclosed to the insurer, can thus invalidate the whole policy?0

It would normally just invalidate claims for that condition or linked conditions (e.g. sprain in a dog's leg may possibly mean hip dysplasia was ruled out too as it could be related) but I suppose some may say that a failure to be honest in the setting up of the policy could invalidate the whole thing. Should state in T&Cs.0 -
It would depend on whether the insurance company thought you were trying to make a fraudulent claim or whether it was just an oversight.
Some companies ask you to declare any pre existing conditions when you apply but others just say they will not cover any pre existing conditions without you declaring them when you take out the policy.0 -

Yes, this was a genuine oversight and I have now informed them of his pre existing condition, so hopefully all will be well. That said, I expect a premium increase but at least all is in order.
Throws up a dilemma if (hopefully not) treatment is required in future that relates to pre existing condition and it is not affordable.0 -
Depends on what the pre existing condition is..
If there is no recurrence and no treatment given for two years Petplan will consider reinstating cover.0 -
Unfortunately I think most insurance companies would consider that pre-existing whether or the pet requires any treatment for 2 years or longer. As a claims assessor myself (although not for Pet Plan) the existence of a HM would mean any future treatment for heart disease would be declined, unless a vet provided proof that it was unrelated and not a progression of the HM.
I'd consider other conditions - say, 1 episode of lameness which resolved on medication and wasn't diagnosed as anything (patella, cruciate etc.) if there was a decent gap without any reoccurrence or anything related. So it's not just Pet Plan who do this.0
