One car two young drivers - what about the black box??
Have I made an inexpensive mistake? We bought a car for our daughter when she was learning to drive. It's registered in her name. She has a black box (from Admiral). She's off to uni this Autumn and the car will stay here. When our son turns 17 we thought he could use/share the same car, to learn in, and then drive, at least for a while. But the car has a black box for her. What about when he needs a black box? Anyone else been in this situation or has a solution? Thanks

When your renewal comes up have a look for insurers using phone app based monitoring. Drivology is one but not sure they cover young drivers, another is Aviva. An app based tracking would allow separate scores for each driver.0

You're unlikely to need a black box for learner driver insurance. What you will need to do is either contact the existing insurer to have your son added as a named learner driver, or look to take out independent learner driver insurance. Black boxes only come in to play when they are let loose on their own...0

If it's an inexpensive mistake is it much of a problem - or did you really mean an expensive mistake?0

Nieces share a car with a black box, so it must be doable. Check with the insurer? All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0 -
Ah yes thank you - I meant to say 'expensive'...0

Will you cancel her policy? If yes then no problems get the box removed.
If her policy is still running then your driving will be recorded onto her policy.
The box does not know who is driving and one reason we chose not to go the black box route. We had a family emergency and another family member needed to borrow the car. Clocked up quite a few miles in a very short period.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
Cancelling the policy when the time comes will probably be the only option. Thanks for all your comments.0

Have you tried calling Admiral and asking what they suggest?0

I haven't spoken to Admiral yet. It's not imminent. Trying to get ahead and wondered if anyone on here has been in this situation and would say what they'd done.0

Those phone-based driver monitoring apps are not as they appear. I tested both the Direct Line Direct Drive and the Aviva apps over a 6 month period and found that if I drove really carefully, my ratings were around the 80 mark, whilst if I drove like I had stolen it, both apps rated my driving at 100%.
Based on that, if I drove like a humpty, DL would actually reward my driving, whilst driving carefully would see no rewards at all.
I am quite surprised that with black box technology widely available, the insurers have yet to come up with a solution to the one-car, many drivers scenario. Surely they can use some kind of card based device similar to the digitachs used in trucks?.
After all, the op cannot be the only person to encounter this problem.Never Knowingly Understood.
