You are right to be cautious. I have a different email for comps as you get lots of crap. I am a newbie too so welcome. Others will be along to let you know the ins and outs but read the info sticky'ss at the top of the page they should help Good Luck Hun xx:beer: Officially Debt Free Nov 2012 :beer:0

I have noticed that thanks given and the number of thread views are a better indication than the numbers of repliers. Take a look at the website you are directed to. Just some of the questions I ask myself
Is it a company you have possibly heard of?
how many spellings mistakes on the page?
how much info are they asking for?
If they ever ask for passwords, other than becoming a member, I'm out of there
Some of these comps are posted on sites such as loquax, and are quite legitimate, but be careful of agreeing to too much. I usually just agree to T&C, I don't fancy being spammed to death... but then again, I haven't won anything either!!0 -
I've never seen any outright 'scam comps' but there is a few 'spam' 1s u might want to avoid like ones from a company called MYoffers. When someone posts 1 of these though others will reply to tell people to be weary.
Don't worry at all about the threads with no replies, doesn't mean they are dodgy at all! It actually says in the rules somewhere not to 'bump up' threads for the sake of it as many compers like to enter the comps by dates it was posted etc.
That's why they invented the 'thanks' button I think because when people just keep bumping the thread to say thanks it made it difficult to find new comps you hadn't entered already.
So a good tip which many will offer is to always click the thanks button on ones you enter and that way if it is bumped again you will know if you have entered it or not because you risk being disqualified for entering twice. And also look into getting autofill or roboform as these can automatically fill in your details and save you lots of time.
Don't worry though, if you think something is dodgy you can still ask but you will defo soon get the hang of which 1s to avoid (there is hardly any dodgy things posted on here).
Good luck, i hope that made sense lol!0 -
thanks ever so much for the info!!!
Am determined to win something in my first month even if its a can of pop!!0 -
Also the thing someone said above about getting a separate competition email is very good advice cuz u don't want too much spam in your normal email. I've got a separate hotmail competition email. Some people often wonder if you still win stuff with hotmail emails - well you do
Oh and always check which Terms and Conditions buttons u tick too as some1 mentioned too. I always make sure I 'opt out' and rarely get any spam
Ps. i've only been here around 3months n i defo picked it up quickly and have been thrilled with every single prize ive got and it's all added up to a few hundred poundsGot lots of little luxuries for myself with this new hobby

im quite new also compared to most on here... but you have to be in it to win it! i entered loads and checked that others had entered by how many people had thanked and finally things started to arrive. i have not had any majour junk mail as yet and not one phone call but i do opt out of my details being passed about, weather that makes a difference anyway. just go for it and good luck, but it takes time to get a result so dont give up if you have not had any wins in your first week it can be ages them they dont stop (i hope anyway )
any spam is usually cleared as soon as it it posted the mods and others who know the difference on here are very good

I think that no replies is more of an indication that nothing is wrong with the comp, there are some seriously experienced compers. On the occassion that you do get a comp posted for a spammy website then people will normally point this out, the most common is 'myoffers' although even they offer genuine prizes.
Also the number of thanks or views is normally higher depending on the desirability of the prize rather than the integrity of the comp source, obviously a comp for a trip to New York will get more entries than a Jimmy Carr DVD.
Also, Please see the above discussion thread which is probably the best place for this kind of topic to be posted.
