Sorry if this has already been posted but I did a search and couldn't find anything.
Just returned from a short break in Spain and went to get some cash out from a Santander ATM. It charged 5 Euros for the transaction. I was using a Nationwide Flex Plus card .You do get the option of saying "No" and the transaction is cancelled but unfortunately I needed the cash to settle a bill where they didn't take cards.
This happened to another person in the party I was with. It is a flat rate 5 Euros whatever you want to withdraw.

There shouldn't be a charge for using a 123 debit card in a Spanish Santander ATM - faq page here http://www.santander.co.uk/uk/current-accounts/current-account-faqs would contact them - did you get a receipt?

Last used mine about 6 weeks ago and no charge.

They used a Nationwide Flex Plus card ;)

It's not uncommon to be charged to use ATMs overseas. Did you have a query OP or just letting people know in case they were not aware?

    I don't see a question.

You agreed to pay Santander €5 to use their ATM. What's the problem?

Just letting people know. The only ATM to levy a fee for withdrawal during the entire break.
Also first time I have come across this.

Was this Santander ATM outside/inside the foyer of a Santander branch? Or was it a machine outside the equivalent of a UK convenience store and perhaps 'badged' Santander?

Thanks for the info, I had heard something about Spanish ATMs starting to charge. Probably it's only for use of non-Spanish cards. So we know now to avoid Santander ATMs, although the others may well follow suit.

It was a UK issued card from Nationwide. A fee free one. Haven't a clue what the situation is with a UK issued Santander card.

Non-Spanish, i.e. foreign cards. It's possible they will charge Spanish cardholders also, but more likely they just target foreigners. This is about the ATM making a charge, I think you have more in mind the usual non-sterling card fees made by Santander UK that are waived when using your card in a Spanish Santander ATM.
