SCOTTISH POWER UTTER MUPPETS, what to do?

My gas and leccy are supplied by GB Enregy Supply/Coop and have been for over 2 years. All bills are up to date and paid on time.

About 3 months ago I received a final demand bill to my address from Scottish Power, addressed to someone I've never heard of and odd spacing on the address showing the property number as "2 2" when mine is simply "2". Curiosity got the better of me due to the large FINAL DEMAND all over the envelope so I opened it and saw that they were claiming nearly £400 of arrears.

I rang them up to tell them that it was nothing to do with me nor this property, gave them my name and told them I'd never heard of the person named on the account and also told them to check their supply as they would see they are not supplying this address. The idiot on the other end was not interested in the slightest and was asking for my password and to confirm my DOB etc before being able to look at the account. Explaining that I could not do this as I am not the accountholder fell on deaf ears and he refused to do anything to help, other than instruct me to return any future mail as person not known at the address and they'd pick it up and sort it out, nothing else to be concerned about. So that's what I've been doing.

Today I receive a letter from Grosvenor Service debt collection on behalf of Scottish Power addressed to the accountholder/"The Current Occupier". So I open it up and they have informed me they will obtain a Warrant of Entry within "the next few days" to cut off my supplies if £440 is not paid to them to settle the account. The access to the leccy and gas is all outside in a box. Naturally I am more than slightly concerned that they will cut off the supply first then it will be up to me to argue the toss with them.

I shall be ringing Grosvenor on Monday to see if I can knock some sense into them seeing as Scottish Power muppets don't care, but I highly suspect that Grosvenor will give even less of a damn and simply state that they are acting OBO Scottish Power and to take up any dispute with them.

What is the best way of dealing with this seeing as Scottish Power are refusing to even discuss or acknowledge the issue because I am not the accountholder?

Thanks.

Why 2nd guess what may happen? As you are billed by another company, I doubt the issue will go too far.

That's easy for you to say from the comfort of your armchair but it's not your supply that's about to be cut off with no-one showing the slightest interest that the debt is nothing to do with me. I'm not even sure what the point of your reply was as it offered nothing of use.

I welcome helpful replies from other members please.

You may find it's a scam mail, I had one from npower in the past for £3k (I used to be with npower) but am with SP, when I rungmy number for npower (not the one on the letter) they told me it was a scam.
My reply offered nothing of use to you as you want to panic over nothing, by Monday you will find it's all alright :p

Any letters from Scottish Power not addressed to you personally should be returned, unopened with "not known at this address" written on the envelope. They are chasing up the previous tenant for a debt and most of the time its just done automatically by computer. Just keep returning them, don't open them.

There's no point phoning Scottish Power, you are not their customer so they can't discuss the account with you, so no point in you getting annoyed with them and calling them muppets. Just return the mail not addressed to you.

As for the letter from the debt collection agency, it'd be better to respond to them in writing rather than phoning. So send it back to them with a letter stating you are a new tenant as of whatever date you moved in, the debt is nothing to do with you and you don't know who or where the previous tenant is. And ask them to stop sending letters to your address. If they haven't mentioned the name of the debtor anywhere in the letter, don't give them your name in case they just send back a letter with your name on it!

If the unlikely event that anyone from the debt collection agency ever turns up at your door, ask them who they are looking for, and then show them some ID along with a utility bill to prove you are not the preson they are looking for.

Yes I realise all that and as I clearly stated in my post, that's exactly what I've been doing and it's achieved absolutely nothing as they're now about to cut off my electric and gas that they don't supply.

I am not a new tenant. I have lived here for over 10 years as the sole occupant and owner so it is not an old debt from someone that lived here (I know the previous occupant).
  • They won't cut you off, just double check the msn on the bill.

Look at the meter point reference numbers on you GB energy bills and on the SP final demand. They may say MPAN and/or MPRN on the bills. These are unique to a property and I suspect you will find they are different. Armed with this information, write to SP and the debt collectors, telling them to cease all further harassment.

So the final bill you received was not addressed to you, nor actually had your correct address on it?
    Yet you still opened it.
What makes it think it's yours?

A demand addressed to "The occupier" or similar is not legally enforcible.

    2 2 looks more like 22 than 2, is there a number 22?

Look for your electricity supply number your electricity bill. It’s a 21 digit number which usually starts with an ‘S’ and will be in either a table or a row. It is also known as an MPAN (Meter Point Administration Number). Alternatively, contact your existing supplier.
